You are a Christian. I am not. You posting your scripture is not going to convert me, no matter how touching it is. Don't get me wrong here, I'm glad that you have found your faith and that it is something that moves you to become a better person. Having faith in something is a value that I truly find to be very important. Yet, I'm so tired of seeing random scriptures on everything. Graduation caps. Twitter bios. Sorority coolers (the irony).
It's not the scripture that is actually written out and able to be communicated either. It's the "Jeremiah 11:23" and "Deuteronomy 31:6." It's the posting of scripture without any kind of explanation. How exactly is this spreading the message? I, as a non-Christian, have never seen a scripture somewhere and said, "I'm gonna look that up." No, I have always just kind of scoffed it off. That's not to be a disrespect, but because it's not effective communication.
My real question is this, do you think doing this is going to actually change anyone's mind on your religion? Not only are you just perpetuating the notion of Christians who pick and choose what scripture to pay attention to, but you're not even spreading the word. Before someone says, "Those open to the message will look it up," I'm gonna say this: Isn't your goal to change the minds of the stubborn? Don't you want to make a difference in those who need it most? Aren't those the people who need you to effectively communicate the word of God?
I want to make it very clear that by saying this, I'm not saying that your religion is annoying to me. I'm actually an avid supporter for religious freedom in the U.S., but this is has nothing to do with your freedoms. This is just downright a stupid way to share the word. I would say that you need to think of a new way, but there already is one. Write it out. Think of it this way. When you really like a song lyric, you don't just write, "Stanza 3 Verse 5," you write it out. Have the same pride in your scripture and respect for the message — that you literally worship — and write it out.
Ultimately, I'm saying this: As a person who is proud enough of their religion to write where to find the scripture, be proud enough to share that message. Just telling people where to find it isn't enough. You may say that you can take a cow to water but you can't make them drink, but I think that you can. For all you know that cow doesn't know how to drink that water. Help them. Guide them. Teach them the way. That way, the next time, they can do it on their own.
