In less than one month from now, many of us will find ourselves flocking down to MIS (Michigan International Speedway for those who do not know) to join together for an epic weekend filled with music, friends, and assured good times. Yes, I am talking about Faster Horses. Many of us are counting down to this event, for it is one of the biggest highlights in a Michigan summer. As a girl originally from the Hoosier state, I received my first taste of this ultimate country bash last summer where I found myself camped out in Brookfest. In those three days alone, I made so many amazing memories with my friends, having the time of my life without giving a care in the world. However, looking back now, I do realize a few rookie mistakes that myself and a few others did make throughout the weekend. Therefore while we continue to mark days off of the calendar until July 15th, here are some helpful tips to all of the recruits who will be joining us at the party this year.
1. Get lots of high quality H2O
We all know that water is no one's drink of choice during the festival, but trust me when saying it will save your butt while you're baking in that mid-July heat
2. Communicate with your campsite
Start a group chat and figure out who's bringing what. It becomes redundant when five of you bring corn hole, or the same food/drinks. By talking and organizing with one another more diversity is brought to your site and more possibilities for a good time.
3. Zero tolerance for drama
Everyone is at Faster Horses to have a good time and make some memories. So when you are trying to figure out who you want to be tent neighbors with, keep in mind that all of you will be in extremely close quarters throughout the weekend. Therefore if you know that ____ tends to come with melodrama, maybe consider not having them be a part of your site and tell them you'll see him/her at the concert(s).
4. Don't over-stuff your suitcase
I'll be the first to admit I am the queen of over packing. However when it comes to this country fest, less is more in regards to your personal suitcase.
5. What to actually pack
Considering most of everybody will be drinking, pack clothes that are easy and comfortable to move in. There will be a lot of walking, and you'll most likely be dancing at the concerts so why wear outfits that make you chafe, blister, or barely breathe? It'll be hot so throw in a bathing suit or two, and flip flops are way more breathable than your cowboy boots.
Toiletries are the only exception to this rule
6. Be a little spontaneous
One of the coolest aspects of Faster Horses is that there are so many people. With that comes a little diversity. Therefore it is the perfect time to meet different people and experience new adventures.
7. Just Dance
Like many others in the world today, I suffer with what many identify as "no rhythm" or more bluntly, I cannot dance well. However during this magical redneck soiree, I simply did not care. As soon as Florida Georgia Line started playing "It's Just What We Do", I told myself screw it I'm about to have a good time. Have no society-based judgmental fears, only focus on having the time of your life.
8. Do you have your exit buddy?
When the bands are finished and the final fireworks fizzle into the night, everyone and I mean EVERYONE will be trying to rush out of there to get back to their sites. Therefore to make sure you'll get back to your tent in one piece, designate yourself an exit buddy and just keep swimming.
As previously stated, Faster Horses is hands down one of the biggest highlights of the summer. It is a weekend outlet that allows you to let loose with your friends, not having to burden yourself with daily life. To all of the newbies about to enter the party of the weekend this year, hopefully these tips will help you through the festival with ease. Regardless, I'm sure you'll have a ball but make sure to keep yourself hydrated just in case.
