If you ask anyone who has curly hair, they will probably go on a long rant about how hard it is to manage their hair. At one point, I was one of those people, however through time I have learned tips that will leave your curls nice and moisturized.
1. Coconut oil.
Coconut oil can pretty much be used on everything! My favorite way to use it is to de-tangle my hair before washing it. You will need to section off your hair and grab about a teaspoon amount for each section, depending on your hair length. Warm up the coconut oil in the palm of your hands, and finger comb it in each section. After you have done this to each part you can tie it up in a bun and let it soak in for about 30 minutes. Once you are done you can go in the shower, rinse out the oil, and continue to wash it as you normally would.
You can also use coconut oil as a styling product, however in this case you would take much less product. Take about a pea size amount and just apply the oil to your ends to avoid product build up.
2. Satin pillow case.
Cotton pillow cases typically break your hair from tossing and turning all night. With Satin pillow cases, they will help to avoid breakage and they are super comfortable to lay on. You can find them at Sally's Beauty Supply, or anywhere that sells bedding accessories.
3. Pineappling.
The pineapple is a very high bun or ponytail, that is great to sleep in or wear around the house. The style helps maintain your curls without forming a crease or disrupting your curl pattern. There are many step-by-step tutorials online to help achieve this hairstyle.
4. Know your curl pattern
There are three types of curly hair, each have three levels ranging from A-C. The three types are wavy hair (type 2), curly hair (type 3), and coily hair (type 4). It is beneficial to figure out what your curl pattern is so you can figure out which products will work best. You can determine your curl type here. It is also possible to be a combination of two curl patterns.
5. Avoid harsh chemicals.
Products with ingredients such as sulfates, silicones, or alcohols can strip hair of its natural oils. These products can also make your hair prone to being more dry and cause build up. Products such as Shea Moisture are great because they have organic ingredients and no harsh chemicals.
6. Deep condition.
If you have dry hair, it is best to leave your conditioner in your hair for a while. While leaving the conditioner in you can do other tasks such as shaving your legs, or even sleeping. Once you are done rinse it out, your hair should be noticeably more soft.
7. Cold water.
After you have rinsed out your conditioner, for the last minute or so in the shower, it is best to do a quick rinse of your hair with cold water. While the cold may be unbearable, it is only for a short while. Many have said the cold water leaves your hair looking shiny.
