My first classic rock concert that I ever went to was to a Joan Jett concert in Maryland when I was 19 years old. It was called a "Free Fest," and she wasn't the only act there. Musicians like Robert Plant, Matt & Kim and even Ludacris performed. Although I had a ton of fun, I was pathetically unprepared. Now, as a self-dubbed hipster in my mid-twenties, I've been to a few more concerts and am actually going to see Journey this weekend in Charlotte, NC. In honor of this grand occasion, I'm going to give other young people a few tips on how to be somewhat prepared for the grittiness of rock shows.
1. Always Bring a Towel
Whether you're using it to sit on in the grass far back from the stage, or just drying your face off because you've been rocking out, these things really do come in handy. There's also that one ignorant buff guy that thinks he's hardcore and might end up spilling beer all over you. You just never know, a famous, sweaty rocker might get done with a set and ask to borrow it.
2. Pack Sunscreen
As someone who burns within half of an hour of being out in sunlight, I always make sure to pack sunscreen with a least a SPF of 70 or higher. So, if you have ghostly pale skin and plan to be out in the sun for a long concert, this one's for you. Also, you may want to consider whether you prefer spray-on or the lotion.
3. Educate Yourself with the Bands Performing
There will most likely be someone, even in your own group of friends or family, who will try to challenge the authenticity of your love of classic rock. Whether they are a group that has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame or just a group that has a decent sized fan base and are just getting started, you should try to familiarize yourself with them and even listen to their songs so that you can sing along with everyone.
4. Don't Forget Your Tickets
Nowadays, ticket sellers on the internet will prompt you to have your tickets saved onto your phone and to also have a printed out copy. Trust me, you do not want to make a long trip to see a band and not be able to get into the show; it's both devastating and terrifying. You could look for scalpers at the show, but the chances are slim that the tickets are real, and they will most likely be outrageously expensive.
and finally...
5. Have Fun!
This is probably the most important rule to follow. No matter if you're alone or with a group of friends, just rock your heart out. These will make for some awesome memories down the road and maybe even cement your love for a band that you've never even heard of. Music has a strange and magical way of bringing everyone together, so enjoy!
