10 Things You Should Know If You Are Living In A College Dorm

College rocks, dorms do not.

College can have many advantages about it, but with advantages also comes with a lot of disadvantages. This is my personal list of 10 things you should know about dorm life before it begins.

1. Bring and wear shower shoes

ESPECIALLY if you have community bathrooms. People are gross, they leave their hair all in the shower and who knows what else.

2. Most dorms will have "Quiet Hours"

Yes, quiet hours. Which means you have to be quiet. No loud TV's, laughing. talking. If you do break this rule, be prepared to have a knock at your door from your RA. Depending on what mood your RA is in will determine if you just get a warning or get written up.

3. Room inspections

In my dorm, room inspections happened once a month. They happened before we went home for long breaks as well. If you did not have your trash taken out, your food put away and you bed made, you would not pass your room inspection. If you did not pass the first time you, they will check again in 24 hours and if you do not pass that one you will get a fine.

4. Visitation hours

In my dorm, we had visitation hours. This meant that from 12AM-12PM we were not allowed to have anyone visit. If someone came in during those times they could get written up and not be allowed to enter that dorm again.

5. One bad apple can spoil the whole bunch

My visitation for my floor got revoked for a whole week because someone threw away food in the bathroom trash. That was not allowed, we had to throw our trash away at the end of the hall.

6. Stairs

Lucky for me, my dorm did not have any elevators. I also lived on the 4th floor. I walked up and down those stairs maybe 3 or 4 times a day.

7. Do not let your dirty laundry pile up

If you let your dirty laundry pile up, you will be up at 2am doing laundry and then carrying up your now clean laundry up 4 flights of stairs.

8. Vending machine snacks are over priced

They have better things at Walmart. Save your money and time.

9. Fire drills are no fun

Especially if their is a malfunction with the fire alarm and it constantly goes off for no reason.

10. Have fun

There will not be a time where you are paying 4,000 to live in a closet with your best friends!

After all college is still pretty great and I hope you have a blast this year.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
