It is not common for many to experience traveling alone pre-college. Many experience their first solo trip when they go back home via train, bus, and/or plane. But being in college brings an added responsibility of taking charge of your own travel itinerary. You can face the struggle of booking a ticket (and realizing how expensive it can be), arranging ground transportation, and planning the trip. And there is always a chance that you will encounter unforeseen challenges and pitfalls. But whether you are traveling alone back home or going abroad, it is important to be cautious and safe. Here are few tips to keep in mind to have a smooth solo trip.

1. Prepare

Make sure that you have all your materials whether it be your legal documentations (passport, ID, etc), transportation tickets, reservations, guidebook, etc. Having these items digitalized on your phone via DropBox, Google Drive, or in your photo gallery can be a lifesaver if you lose them.

2. Planning & scheduling

It is important to schedule arrangements such as ground transportation and hotels beforehand to prevent long waits and disappointments. Also, taking a spontaneous trip sounds fun but it will be enhanced if you plan ahead.

3. Be aware

Make sure that someone you trust knows of your itinerary and knows generally about your whereabouts. Safety and security are key when traveling alone and they help to guarantee a fun time.

4. Pack smart

Don’t overpack. It’s not worth it when you have to lug around multiple 50 lbs+ bags and/or an overstuffed carry-on (from experience…). You’ll just end up looking ridiculous and wish that you could throw away all your belongings. Tip: Wear your bulkiest and heaviest item to save space and lighten your load.

5. Rest

Many people are prone to jet lag and if that is the case for you, then resting after a long journey is key to start your trip off right. Maintaining my sleeping schedule despite my location helps me adjust to the time zone easily. Rest to fully enjoy your trip. No one wants to remember how much they slept on the trip instead of exploring.

Overall, traveling alone can be an enlightening experience. You will develop an appreciation for the world and culture. Have fun and travel with confidence--kudos to you for traveling on your own!

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
