So, it's your first time traveling abroad. Maybe you're touring, maybe you're studying, or maybe you just wanted to go see the world. You've got different emotions running through you as you think about your trip - excitement, panic, fear, anticipation, stress, among many others, I'm sure. Well don't fret, this is exactly what you need to know when you're a first time world traveler.
NUMBER ONE: Planning ahead is going to be your best friend. Make sure you know when your flights are, where you're staying, how many meals you'll be spending out of pocket for. Keep a physical, written or typed, copy of all this info, too. That way if a flight gets canceled or your hotel is double booked, you have proof of being there first and hopefully can get priority consideration.
NUMBER TWO: It will be stressful and you should be prepared for that. The important thing to remember is that all the stress plays into the adventure. Things might go wrong and a few things probably will go wrong. Be prepared and embrace the changes with open arms.
NUMBER THREE: You will probably stick out. No matter where you're from, blending into a new place is a very difficult thing to do. People will notice you and treat you a little bit differently, depending on where you go. Behave confidently, but not stupidly. Do be kind and follow the social and legitimate rules of the society you're within, but don't act like you're a local. That's not why you're there. Be yourself, but the best version of yourself. Represent you and your country well.
NUMBER FOUR: The food is going to be different, but please do try it. It's all part of fully immersing yourself into the culture of your location. It might be scary, but be brave. It's totally something worth trying. And who knows? You might end up finding your new favorite food.
NUMBER FIVE: Running alongside food, do your best to immerse yourself in the culture as a whole. Try things that you normally wouldn't, do things that seem strange and outlandish and do them with an open mind. Be brave and be bold, and always remember to document these experiences.
NUMBER SIX: Pack what you'll need, but pack wisely. Some international flights will only allow so much weight for a checked bag. This is especially important when you're traveling with a group because you don't want to be the reason that everything is behind schedule. The best thing you could do for packing is to make a list of things you think you'll need, then go through your list again and really think about what you'll need, and edit accordingly. Hotels supply shampoo, conditioner, and body wash. Lots of disposable things (razors, feminine products, etc.) can be purchased at your location. Only pack what you really need.
If you keep these things in mind while you travel abroad, you'll be golden. Oh, and don't forget an electrical adapter. Outlets are different internationally. Enjoy your trip, take tons of pictures, and may you be blessed wherever you are to go!
