4 Tips To Keep Your Faith While You're In College
Bible Study For Catholics

This year is technically my senior year of college. I am a devout student, and being successful means a lot to me. I am also Catholic. Taking classes about worldly topics can make faith a difficult topic. In fact, at times this semester, some of my friends have even said, "I am surprised you are still Catholic with the kind of classes you are taking." Through it all though, it is important to remember where truth is planted. Here are four tips that I try to remember while taking challenging courses in college:

1. You must recognize what is true, and stand by it.

If you find yourself doubting between what is true and what is a theoretical discussion, remind yourself of your roots. Theory classes full of multiple discourses and discussion may cloud your brain, but it is important to remember the truth that you come from. You are made in love, to love and be loved. The Lord is your Father and He loves you unconditionally. There is truth and wisdom in the church. Take a stand.

2. Don't be afraid to ask questions.

Following number one, do not be afraid to ask questions. Speak up! If you are someone who knows me personally, you know I am constantly asking questions. My brain craves to know as much as it can. Every day I ask questions in both my classes and in my faith. Seek Counsel. For your classes, ask a professor or a TA. For your faith, ask a church leader, missionary, or adult in your parish. Do not be afraid to admit that you do not know an answer. If you are confused as to why your professor said something, ASK! If you are reading the Bible and it is just not making sense, ASK! Asking is how we learn. There is someone who is always going to know more than you, so ask them!

3. Surround yourself with faithful people.

We become who we surround ourselves with. It's okay to be choosy. If you want to stay true to your faith while going to college, if you want to keep your eyes pointed towards the Lord at all times, surround yourself with people who desire to do the same thing. The Lord created us to live in communion. Be with His people. Get dinner with a friend. Talk about the Bible. Join clubs whose morals align with yours. Through everything that happens in our lives, the Lord is there.

4. Be just as dedicated to your faith as you are to your studies... if not more.

If you just sat in an hour and a half lecture, you can dedicate an hour and a half to your faith. There is always time for prayer, and we avoid it by making excuses. Do not let trivial responsibilities get in the way of your relationship with the Lord. It is so important. When class gets overwhelming, cling to your faith. Run to the Lord. He is waiting to hear from you and wants to help you through your struggles. (Also, as you study, remember that you are more than your grades.)

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
