3 Short Poems For An Optimistic
Andy Wong

We write and experience poetry all the time. It’s just a matter of how an individual defines poetry and whether or not they have the will to put their pen to the paper. That love letter you wrote to your girlfriend? Pure poetry. Have you ever listened to a beautiful song and felt like you could literally feel the words in your veins? That's experiencing poetry. Today I write to you three short poems that I wrote at separate times of the same day. One in the morning, at noon, and then at night. I hope this insight encourages you to pick up writing your own poetry, enjoy!

5:46 am

I am sitting on the steps of the deck glaring out

The trees are stone still

The sun is shy peaking around the evergreen tree

As I look around my irises are filled with different hues of blue and orange

Morning dew claims every blade of grass illuminating and paving the steps before me

Smells of fresh cut grass fill my lungs

My skin is kissed by the moisture in the air

I am overcome with the sensation and possibilities for the day

I stand up and walk towards the grass

1:28 pm

My dog sleeps soundly by the edge of the sofa, his whimpers soft and quiet

Birds are chirping behind the glass door

I step outside and it's a new world

The sun shines bright and creates dark shadows that weren't there before

The trees whistle in the wind and their words are carried throughout the sky

The sound of a basketball hitting the pavement close by fills my ears

I sit down and close my eyes

Around me everything is alive

9:00 pm

As the day comes to an end

The wind has slowed to almost a halt

The sun has gone once more

The whispers in the air have gone to sleep

But the moon has risen and gives light to the shadows

The grass has grown and seems wilder than before

I lean back onto the wooden stairs

The trees have become silhouettes

I take a deep breath

Today has just become yesterday

Thanks for reading my short poems! These poems only took 10-15 minutes out of my day. There's something about observing the world and putting words into every occurrence, that makes poetry so beautiful. If you want to start, start by opening your eyes to more than the things you can physically see.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
