3 Poetry Books You Need To Read

1. The Sun and Her Sunflowers by Rupi Kaur

You probably came across Milk and Honeyat some point either on social media or at your local bookstore. Since her first poetry book was published in 2014, Rupi Kaur has become one of the most influential contemporary poets.

The Sun and Her Sunflowersdeals with brokenness, identity issues, immigration, femininity, and love. She explores her sense of belonging as an immigrant in America and the duality issues it brought to her own identity, as well as the complexities of family and abuse.

Kaur also stands up for the empowerment of women. She further narrates experiences of sexuality and coming to terms with being a woman in a society that constantly tries to diminishes us. Her poetry definitely expresses a strong sense of feminism.

Her style, like most contemporary poetry, is rather simple. Her words are easily understood and her poems short. The true power of her poetry is the feeling she conveys and the impact she creates in such a compressed amount of words.

2. Memories by Lang Leav

Lang Leav published her first poetry book in 2013 titled Love & Misadventure. However, my absolute favorite book of hers is Memories.

Her poetry narrates heartbreaking stories of past lovers as well as the search for the true meaning of love. Lang plays with different approaches to love throughout her poetry.

As a young adult, I could feel how her words reflected my own experiences. She also portrays herself as a poet through her words. She focuses on her own inspirations and how brokenness and certain people served as muses to her poetry. So, if you are an artist of any kind, you will be able to find yourself portrayed in her own words.

Her style is a bit more complex with a frequent use of metaphors and longer poems. She also varies between prose and poetry. I would say that my favorite aspect of Memories is definitely its metaphors and similes.

3. Flux by Orion Carloto

The most recent poetry book I have read is Flux by Orion Carloto, an Instagram influencer as well as a poet. As a young adult herself, she easily captures was it is like to be an emerging woman and having one's heartbroken. Her words reflect beautiful images of her own experiences regarding love, mourning lovers, and finding one's true self.

She creates closure with the reader by inserting pictures of her own diary entries, as well as images to accompany her writing.

Her style varies incredibly between one-line poems, one or more stanzas, and prose. Her writing is the kind of writing that you need to pause at the end of each page to realize what had just happened–– to understand the power of her words.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
