For those that may wonder what it's like to be a collegiate athlete as well as a student, from the perspective of a current student-athlete, I can say that it's simply put very difficult. Even though it's super tiring sometimes, and takes up the majority of our time, there's still some fun that goes with it all. So to illustrate the underlying fun beneath the stress, I couldn't think of a better example of that than Parks and Recreation. A show made for making light of stressful situations.
1. When you get out of a morning practice but have an 8:30 a.m. class
Especially if it's a class that you're already struggling with, then it makes the feeling about ten times worse.
2. When you're on the bus to a competition/game
Riding a cramped bus for more than four hours offers for some pretty hilarious videos and stories for later such as climbing the backs of the seats in races and singing karaoke that the coaches hate.
3. Eating breakfast after a particularly rough practice
I have never before seen someone eat, swallow, and talk in the same sentence before college and honestly it's a sight to witness.
4. When everyone else is going out on Friday's but you still have practice the next morning
Like I get it, you're trying to get pumped because you want this night to be crazy, but can you just do it somewhere else? I'm trying to sleep and you're only reminding me of what awaits me in the morning.
5. That mid-season crazy that seems to possess everyone
It's amazing what happens to the human psyche when you stick the same people around each other every day for several months doing the same thing again and again.
6. When coach asks how your classes are going
For your sake and mine, if I don't bring it up, and unless it's really bad, it's better for the two of us if you don't ask.
7. Walking into class when you get your new gear
I know this can be super annoying, but you know the feeling of when you get something new and you want all your friends to see it? It's exactly like that so just let us have our moment for the day.
8. Being home on breaks and not having to workout every day
I will workout over the breaks, but know it's the guilt of eating the same amount and working out less coupled with the fear of not being in shape when I come back that fueled that 5-mile run.
9. When there is team drama (especially for female teams)
We are around each other for months at a time; there's going to be drama. The best thing to do is to try not to get involved and grab popcorn for the more intense moments.
10. Coming back from a game or competition and finishing a project that's due the next morning
Being a student is hard enough when you suffer from chronic procrastination. Being an athlete makes this personality trait about 10 times more deadly than the average individual.
11. When your coach rips into everyone during practice...
If I come to class or if we are still in practice and my face looks like I'm chopping up an onion, it's probably better that you don't mention it. It's safer you assume that I watched The Fault in Our Stars for the 4th time in a row earlier.
12. ...And then asks if you know why they are upset with you
Seriously. This is the most loaded question ever and I wish coaches would quit asking it. No, I probably don't know why you are upset, but I do know that my confused expression when you ask if I know is going to make the situation so much worse.
13. When you're finally out of season and can sleep in
The relief of being able to sleep through the night and not have to wake up early in the morning is the equivalent of finally going to the bathroom after holding it in for hours.
14. When people ask why you put yourself through all the stress and problems of your sport
We may complain about our sport a bunch, but know we are using it as a coping mechanism and that we most likely enjoy it. Just let us vent for a bit, give us some food, and everything will be alright again.
