Whether you are flying home for the holidays or elsewhere, we can all agree that flying is a great method of transportation. As someone that takes an airplane often, I hang out in airports more than the average person. I think we can all concur that no two flights are the same: different locations, different times, different foods and surrounded by different people. However, no matter where I'm going, I always seem to have the same thoughts when traveling by airplane. Here are the most common thoughts that anyone will have when sitting around 30,000 feet from the ground.
1. I will make my luggage fit.
Light packing and winter clothes don't mix well. When you can only afford to bring two carry-on items with you, every item that you pack becomes very important. After hours of trying to get everything to fit, the real challenge is making it fit on board the aircraft. If my luggage doesn't fit, I try everything possible to make it fit - even to the point of taking some clothes out and sitting with them on.
2. Will they judge me if I ask for an extra bag of chips?
Ok, when you get 'hangry' (aka: hungry and angry) and airport food is expensive and you live on a student budget - then what is the problem with asking for another bag of chips? Chips are food and food makes me happy, so the way I see it is that I would be doing everyone a favor!
3. I need coffee.
Coffee helps keep me going - it is a must! Without coffee I can't handle being around hundreds of people while concentrating on getting to the right gate, at the right time and sitting in the right seat. I can't even talk to anyone until after I have a cup of joe.
4. Everyone below looks like ants.
My favorite part about flying is soaring through the clouds while looking down at the world in which you are just an observer. You admire the city planning and think about what it would be like to be in that city rather than looking down at it.
5. Are we there yet?
When you have had a series of connecting flights, a couple of hours can feel like an eternity, especially when you are on your way home. As I sit in my seat during take-off, I ask myself the same question hoping that eventually I will get to my final destination faster than someone can say "soon."
