25 Thoughts That Every UW-Madison Freshman Has During The Winter
Taylor Lauri

Does anyone really know what they're getting themselves into when coming to the University of Wisconsin? No. As a freshman, we convince ourselves that it's not that bad and that it will get better. None of us were ready for -64 degrees, mentally or physically. Every day is a new adventure. Will it be slippery today? Cold? Hot? Snowing? Hailing? No one knows!

From November to April, the weather just does its own thing. One day it could be 35 degrees and the next day, it could be -20 with a windchill of -40 degrees. Sounds like fun! These are the inner thoughts that every student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison has on a day to day basis from November to April.

1. How did I even get up this morning?

One cup of coffee is just not enough for Monday morning. This size cup should do!

2. Sweatshirt, jeans and duck boots it is!

Today is just not the day to dress up, maybe tomorrow!

3. Why did I chose this school again?

I don't even know what went through my mind when I chose this school.

4. Why?

Why? Why is there ice on the ground?

5. Is it time to go home now?

Um I need a break and I need to go home!

6. I'm getting a hot chocolate after this!

I'm getting an extra extra extra large hot chocolate!

7. Only 40 days until spring break! Woo!

Soon i'll be somewhere tropical (or at home).

8. Are my boogies really frozen right now?

Is this even possible?

9. Okay I don't care how slow I walk, I am not falling down Bascom today! Not today!

You can walk around me, I'm not going any faster than this!

10. Is it even this possible to be this cold?

I can't feel my legs, my ears or my entire body.

11. Again, why?

Just why?

12. Should've brought my hat today

I cannot feel my face right now, a hat would be nice!

13. As soon as I'm done with class, I'm sprinting back to my room and watching Netflix.

Netflix marathonnnnnnn!!!!!!!!!!!!

14. This is ridiculous

This is just not ok at all.

15. There's no point of taking off my coat in class

There's just no point if it takes me like 50,000 minutes to put it on at the end of class.

16. Really? -64?

I didn't even know that it was possible to get this cold.

17. I just don't understand

I have no words.

18. Alabama gets a snow day and we're stillĀ getting frost bite walking to class?

It snows an inch in Alabama and they get a snow day?

19. I'm ordering in food, I can't go outside

How much food can I eat?

20. Hopefully I don't slip this time!

I've slipped like 5 times on the way here so hopefully I don't slip again!

21. For the last time, why?

?????

22. I'm not ready for this

I have to physically and mentally prepare myself for what I am about to take on.

23. Next semester, I'm transferring to the University of Hawaii

Catch me not in negative degree weather this time next year!

24. Is this what frostbite looks like? Probably. I have frost bite

I don't know what frostbite looks like but I'm almost certain this is.

25. NOPE!

Absolutely not.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
