America does not belong to any one man, not even the president and especially not the current president. America belongs to the people. America belongs to immigrants, African Americans, hispanics, latinos, the LGBTQ+ community, the disabled; America belongs to all of its people. While I absolutely appreciate a good ‘Welcome to Trump’s America’ joke, there seems to to be something provoking and precarious about letting the President believe that America is just another real estate gain. America cannot be bought, owned or ruled by one person.
I know it has been a long and news-filled 25 days of office, but this cannot become an American norm. America was built on ideals of progress, equality, change and hope. Yes, America was also built on racism, misogyny, prejudice, and a lot of other ‘isms’ that our President embodies but that does not mean that America now becomes a symbol of the 1800s instead of a symbol of freedom and acceptance.
The world looks to America and its citizens as leaders and pacesetters in our global climate and we the people cannot allow the President the violate the constitution in every executive order and decimate the hope that Americans hold in their hearts. I love my country, but patriotism is not blind loyalty and I refuse to let that world equivocate me with the President.
I do not want to see the world follow in our President’s footsteps and I do not want the world to believe that I am a part of Trump’s America or that such a thing is even a part of reality.
We are marching, protesting, debating, and talking about every political statement that leaves the mouths of Trump’s horrifically unqualified cabinet as well as his own. We, as American citizens create and define our country as it moves forward and progresses as a modern nation.
No one man will define who we are, what we do or what we believe. Regardless of color, faith, sexuality or gender America believes that you are to be accepted, supported and protected.
I believe in our America, and I will fight for our America. So, while the world watches I hope that they see the resistance. I hope that they see our President cannot define the foundations and beliefs of this country but only remind us what we are fighting for.
