This Is False Advertising

Inspired by: Emily Ford's YouTube video "You Look Disgusting."

As a person that constantly frequents the beauty industry whether it be on YouTube or Instagram, I am constantly fascinated and amazed at what men and women can do to completely transform their faces. They can add or remove beards or make themselves look like an animal. I try and do it myself at home, since they make it look so easy, and find that these people are truly artists. This is a practiced skill that takes talent, dedication, practice and not just anyone can do it. It takes a special kind of visionary. In my state of fascination, I rush to the comments to see if anyone else’s excitement matches mine. I was looking for others like myself, who were fueled by make-up and truly appreciated the art of it, of just how much effort went into it. Instead, I am met by a swarm of (mostly) men, proclaiming their distrust for these artists, how it is deceitful, wrong and “false advertising.” Speaking as a woman, I will be addressing them and from their perspective. Not that it doesn’t happen to men or it’s just men leaving the nasty comments, but the majority of this happens to women, so they will be my prime target.

First of all, let me say a woman putting on make up no matter how differently she looks when she’s done is 100 percent not false advertising. Women are not for sale. They are not your property. Every time a woman leaves the house, she is not an advertisement waiting for someone to take up her offer. She is a woman on her way to do whatever she set her mind out to do, whatever that may be, and none of which include you. I’m so tired of reading “this is false advertising” or “this is why I’m going swimming on a first date”. At the end of the day, that woman is still the same person. You should feel happy for her that she has the confidence. If you have intents to stay with this person, you should love them at their best and worst. That only comes with maturity.

In case you didn’t know, natural women have flaws. They have moles and freckles and acne and redness and dry patches or oily patches and they are all perfect. All the “naturalness” you men seek after is not truly natural. Women do not have naturally bright red or tinted pink lips nor do they have sparkly eyelids. I’m sorry if you can’t see past that. If you do not like a woman’s make-up or think that she is too “cake-faced," it doesn’t matter. It is not your face to make a canvas of. It is not your body. She is not here to please you. She is here to please herself.

You’re allowed to have your own opinion and think all of these things, but must you comment them? 90 percent of women have little to no self-esteem. Why should we tear them down even more? If you are not happy with the way a woman is dressing, acting or looks, why waste her time? Or yours? If you are not interested, move on. Your words do nothing but hurt.

If anything, take this with you: Women are their own, independent people who will make their choices as to what suits them and no one else.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
