Being Brazilian comes with a lot of stereotypes. People might think you grew up in the Amazon, dancing samba, and swimming with piranhas. But as we all know, not all stereotypes are true. Here are some actual things that you can probably relate to if you grew up Brazilian:
You were raised on shows like Smilinguido and Turma da Monica
This was your typical meal growing up
And it’s not even an argument that Guaraná is the best drink ever
No matter how many people were in the car, there was always more "espaço"
Always room for one more
It was so annoying when people assumed you spoke Spanish
And even more annoying when they asked if you spoke 'Brazilian'
It's called Portuguese
When your mom was about to lose her patience and pulled out “Você ta me enchendo o saco”
Which translates into “You’re filling my bag” aka ‘stop testing me’
Or when your mom got mad and told you “Vai planta batata na China”
It literally means "go plant potatoes in china" which basically means 'go away and stop bothering me'
When your mom yells at you in English vs Portuguese
English:
Portuguese:
“1,2,3! Vai apanha!”: the most dreaded words in the Portuguese language
Havainanas were the single most petrifying item when they were in your mother’s hands
Birthday parties were the best because you got to eat your fill of coxinhas, brigadeiro, pão de queijo, and other delicious treats
But then you had to wait for your mom to all a million of her friends before you could leave
Your family is huge
It's like every time you walk down the street you meet a new cousin
And every time you see them they want to know why you're single
Slash when you're getting married, slash when you're having kids (it never ends)
You're obsessed with soccer/football because you were raised to be
And you’ve spent the past 3 world cups crying
Especially the last world cup
Will we ever live that down?
But you still cheered for Germany in the final because you raised with a rivalry towards Argentina
It gives you a sense of pride when you see other Brazilians killing it out there (Adriana Lima, Alessandra Ambrosio, Gisele Bündchen)
And last but not least, you are extremely proud of being Brazilian
"Sou Brasileiro, com muito orgulho e muito amor"
Brazilian: a word that can have a different definition to each person. Growing up Brazilian, you’ve dealt with a lot of stereotypes, but you’re proud of being where you're from and you’d never give it up even if you could
. To all my fellow Brazilians, take pride in where you're from.
