As 2016 comes to a close, students go on break, this last month and a half seem to rush by and shoot us into the New Year. A lot of things are going to change very soon for everyone and I wanted to share some things that I believe to be important as we step into the ever-changing world that will be 2017.
November has been a very historical month, and I see so many people taking the election to heart.
It’s going to be an interesting future, there has been such an incredible division between people, we’re starting to let our parties define us in a very destructive way. And the thing we need to keep in mind, is that in order to make it through the next 4 years, we have to come together, and be unified for once. We can’t let a vote change the way we look at people, because most people didn’t vote out of hate, they voted out of fear.
Too often do we let our fears control us, get the best of us and define us. Fear is not who we are, and if voting was truly democratic we would have a different president-elect. One thing to take away is that we are still human and fear does not have to rule our lives. I hear too often now, that so many people are fearful of what the future may hold and I can’t help but empathize because I’m afraid, too.
But we can’t let that fear paralyze us into complacency, I see so many brave women and men, who now have a fire lit inside them. They are courageous, if anything I see change brought on by the people, I see an incredible push back. Where the people see what is wrong and choose to stop it.
This country has faced so much pain just in 2016 alone, and we are in for a great deal more if we let it just happen. What we need to keep in mind is that our neighbors are still our neighbors, the events of 2016 should not change the way we see people and treat others. If anything we should be showing more compassion and kindness to one another, especially to the ones who see the world differently than us. Because now it’s not about what has divided us in the past but what should bring us together in this New Year. There will be so many challenges to face, and we have to face them together.
But we can’t forget that we are human and deserve the same respect we would want given to us. So no matter what happens for the end of the year, keep in mind that we need to be respectful of those around us and especially of those that do not agree with our points of view.
