10 Things To Do In Illinois This Summer
Time out Chicago

Living in the middle of Illinois seems like a pretty boring gig at first glance, especially in the summer. I live in the suburb Arlington Heights, northwest of Chicago. So not quite in the city; just my own town. It seems like there isn't much to do, but if you do a little digging and a little bit of traveling, there are endless opportunities to have a fun summer! Here are ten places that are must-visits in Illinois before summer ends.

1. Shakou

Shakou is a new cocktail and sushi bar in the heart of downtown Arlington Heights. It has a much more trendy, downtown Chicago feel than something in the 'burbs. Plus, who doesn't love some fancy sushi?

2. Gillson Beach

Located in Wilmette, IL, Gillson Beach is an absolute must-visit. Not only is it a great beach to lay out and swim at, but it's beautiful; day and night. There is an admission charge during the day, but past 8 PM it's free--and you can night swim!

3. Liquid Fusion

Liquid Fusion is a pit stop I always make on my way to Wilmette for a beach day. It serves loose leaf and bubble tea, frozen fruit smoothies and all different types of coffee. There really is something for everyone, and it's all delicious!

4. The Art Institute of Chicago

If you love art and the city, the Art Institute is the perfect day trip for you. Centered in the city of Chicago, this museum is full of every kind of art you could imagine, and you'll find yourself wandering its halls for hours.

5. Lurie Garden

If you want to visit the city but spend your time outside, Lurie Garden is a whimsical little getaway. Just outside the Art Institute is a beautiful, blooming garden in the middle of the city, and is the perfect place to sit amongst flowers and enjoy your day.

6. Gene & Jude's

River Grove, IL is the home of the best Chicago hotdog place probably on this earth. Serving fresh hot dogs and french fries daily, it's the perfect place to go when you're craving that All-American meal.

7. Busse Woods

Busse Woods is a beautiful trail system for bikers, hikers, walkers or anyone and everyone in between. It's a great area for countless outdoor activities, and stretches all across Elk Grove Village.

8. Big Surf Wave Pool

Big Surf Wave Pool is not your typical, drab swimming pool. This pool creates big, surf-like rolling waves that people can swim through or enjoy on rafts. It really gives that oceanic feel!

9. Adler Planetarium

Right on the lake in the city of Chicago, the Adler Planetarium is a beautiful place to visit and explore the mysteries of space. Along with that, right outside on the lake is a great place to sit and watch the sunset.

10. Cheesie's Pub & Grub

If you're visiting the city, Cheesie's is a place you have to stop and eat at. They serve their famous mac and cheese grilled cheese--with a cup of tomato soup for dipping on the side--and it's to die for.

Summer in Illinois doesn't have to be boring! If you take a little time to look or a little time to travel, your summer will be filled with fun plans and great memories.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
