Transitioning to a vegan lifestyle isn't easy. You have to pay close attention to the ingredients in your food, explain to many curious people why you've chosen this lifestyle, and do what seems like the hardest thing: say no to milk chocolate. Here is a list of tips for becoming vegan that have been successful for myself and my vegan friends!
1. Buy B-12 vitamins.
When deciding if they will become vegan, people often worry about not getting enough protein and the medical problems that can come with a vegan lifestyle. It's difficult to make sure you have enough B-12 because it is found in most meat products, but it's extremely important in protecting the nervous system and maintaining your health. You can easily buy B-12 vitamins from a drugstore or supermarket.
2. Triple your portions.
Meat and seafood often make up a major portion of people's diets. When transitioning to veganism, you'll be eating mostly vegetables and fruits, which make for a much lighter intake. It is likely that you'll lose some weight, but that's normal as long as you make sure your numbers aren't dropping dramatically. The best way to do that is by tripling your portions. Even if it seems like a lot, it'll definitely keep you full.
3. Watch out for animal ingredients.
When grocery shopping, you'll have to spend some time finding vegan foods. Some are an obvious yes or no, but with foods like bread and cookies it's important to read the labels. Here is a great resource with ingredients to look out for.
4. Crazy reactions.
Telling people you're vegan isn't very simple. Usually you're flooded with questions: Why are you doing it? Isn't it hard? How are you getting enough nutrients? Sometimes doing research will help explain the environmental and ethical reasons; other times, it may be for personal reasons like feeling healthier.
5. The price.
Eating healthy isn't easy. Fruits and vegetables are expensive, and you'll have to pay closer attention to on what you're spending your money. Although this may turn you off from becoming vegan, there are numerous benefits to this lifestyle. The food tastes good, makes you feel good, and are good for your health.
