Why are you so quiet?

For as long as I can remember, I have always been super shy and trust me when I say the struggle is real. Being shy is more than the average person sees and understands, which makes it one of the hardest things to live with sometimes. It seems like every day of your life is constantly filled with the unnecessary comments from others regarding how little you speak, and no matter what you do or say, you can't escape them. These comments are not always hurtful, but the majority of the time they are simply annoying and make you feel uncomfortable. Although these comments are annoying, they pretty much come as second nature for those that have been labeled "shy" in their lifetime. Looking back on the past, there were many comments that I heard and willing gave the commenter the satisfaction of me not replying. The truth of the matter is these comments have became a constant part of my life so why not make the most of them, and give those inconsiderate people a taste of of their own medicine by speaking up and replying to their ridiculous comments. Unfortunately, this is something that I have not built up the courage to do, but here are some of the things I get tired of hearing and what I would say in response to them.

1. "Why are you so quiet?"

Wow, thanks for noticing because I had no idea *insert eye roll*. Since you care so much, I guess I'll let you know when I figure it out myself ...

2. "It's OK, I don't bite!"

Thanks, but I'm shy not dumb. You're not a rabid animal so I obviously know that you don't bite; therefore you definitely don't have to tell me. Meeting new people or simply just talking to people is not as easy as it seems when you are shy; it's actually one of the most nerve-wracking things you have to do. So, I am by no means afraid of you biting me, I am more afraid of you judging or not accepting me considering how self conscious I am, but thanks for making a fool out of yourself.

3. "Are you sad?

Did I say I was sad? I'm sorry, I didn't know my natural face looked sad, I'll try to look happier next time.

4. "You should smile more ..."

Oh, I'm sorry I don't smile every second of the day, is that better? *insert fake smile*

5. "Wow, you're just being way too loud!"

Well aren't you just the comedian ...

6. "What are you thinking about?"

How much I was enjoying the peace and quiet until you opened your mouth ...

7. "Are you tired or something?"

Tired...of you talking, yes!

8. "Just go and say Hi, it's no big deal ..."

Oh really...let me pretend for like two seconds I'm not shy and go do that really quick since it's apparently so easy.

9. "Speak up, we can't hear you."

*insert exasperated sigh* Maybe if you stopped talking long enough, you would have heard me ...

10. "Do you even talk?"

Yes...do you even think?

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
