From 2000 to 2007, Gilmore Girls left it's impact on the lives of everyone who watched it. Mothers and daughters sat together on the couch every week to watch the dynamic mother daughter duo of Lorelai and Rory. Women and girls gathered to anxiously watch the Gilmore girls take on Stars Hollow and the world.
My mom and I would cuddle up on the couch every week with abundant amounts of snacks to revel in the magic. And after the season finale we spent the past ten years re-watching every episode countless times and quoting every single line.
Gilmore Girls touched the lives of millions of people and the lessons we all learned from it are endless.
1. The bond between a mother and daughter is endless.
Lorelai and Rory were always "Mother-daughter goals," and I'm sure everyone wanted to have their relationship. Even when they were going through their famous (and horrible) fight in season 6, they got through it and were back in action together as amazing as ever. No matter how bad their fights got, remember the one about Dean? Or the other one about Dean? They still always came back together filled to the brim with love and laughter.
2. A good wallow can solve anything.
No matter how much we wan to try to be like Rory and push through our pain by focusing on forging ahead, Lorelai will always be right in the end. When the pain hits, sometimes the best solution is a good wallow. A pile of drown-in-your-tears movies, a tub of ice cream, some raw cookie dough and a solid cry is the ultimate cure. Even strong and determined Rory had to give into the wallow at some point.
3. A solid reference is invaluable.
Lorelai, Rory, Lane, and every other character were full of quippy references. They had a perfect reference for every situation. Whether they needed a sarcastic reference to a great novel or an endearing one to a timeless film, they never failed to make everyone watching realize that they really needed to catch up on their pop culture. We all have to admit that we scoured over the book of "gilmore-isms" that came with the anniversary edition box-set of DVDs.
I can definitely say that I owe my ability to quote movies and books at the drop of a hat at least partially to Gilmore Girls (the other part is due to my own well-referenced mother).
4. Things don't always happen the way we imagine they will.
Rory never imagined she would end up at Yale, it was supposed to be Harvard all the way, DUH. She also probably never dreamed she would take a year off, be estranged from her mom, and work for the D.A.R., but things happen. Luke didn't plan to have a daughter show up just as he and Lorelai were FINALLY about to get their happy ending. And Lorelai for sure didn't plan for all that ridiculousness with Christopher.
But they all got through it, and most of those unexpected events lead to amazing things in the end.
Just like the Gilmore girls, we learned that we have to just roll with the punches. (And pro-con lists never lie.)
5. Be unapologetically yourself, always.
Did Lorelai and Rory change who they were for anyone else? No. They were their weird and quirky selves always, no matter what.
They were The Gilmore girls; weird, quirky, incredibly intelligent, sweet, loving, super dorky and completely amazing.
