I have read a ton of books throughout my life, and when I say ton, I’m an English major, so I mean it. I have had the books that make me fall in love, some that make me wish sickness and love didn’t exist, but no book has ever done both of these things for me, except “The Fault In Our Stars.” That book makes me feel all the feels.
I am by no means about to give the entire book away to you, I could never do that to you, but I do hope you read it. I strongly advise it. This book is above all my favorite novel of all time, and because of that, I have even found a few favorite quotes that have really changed the way I look at life and I bet they’ll do it for you too.
1. “You don’t get to choose if you get hurt in this world… but you do have some say in who hurts you. I like my choices.”
The sad truth behind this quote is that life really will end up hurting you. You are going to have people say things about you, and do things with and against you. That’s one of the many things life throws at us; however, by only allowing certain people into your life, you eliminate some of that.
2. “Some people don’t understand they’re making when they make them,” I said.“Right of course. But you keep the promise anyway. That’s what love is. Love is keeping the promise anyway.”
When you really love somebody you will do anything in your power to make them happy. We do cray things for the people we truly love. We commit our time and ourselves to that person, but most of all we love. We love them in spite of all the bad things in the world. When the promise gets hard to keep WE DON'T BREAK IT. How lucky are we to be loved by someone who keeps all their promises?
3. “The world is not a wish- granting factory.”
Sadly this is one of the truest things you may ever read. Life is by no means easy, let alone a life of everything we have ever hoped for. We are constantly wishing for a better life or better things, and that’s just not how the world works, it is much easier to sit back and understand we won’t always get what we want in life, but we can love the things we are given.
4. “That’s the thing about pain, it demands to be felt.”
This novel was filled with various types of physical, mental, and emotional pain. No matter what kind or the extent of it, though, we always saw one thing, they survived. Pain is not forever. In all situations, pain is a temporary discomfort, and even the worst of it will always pass in time.
5. “I’m in love with you, and I know that love is just a shout into the void, and that oblivion is inevitable, and that we’re all doomed and that there will come a day when all our labor has been returned to dust, and I know the sun will swallow the only earth we’ll ever have, and I am in love with you.”
In this one line, we learn more about love than from any perfect fairytale ending novel. The world sucks, but love somehow makes it all better. Augustus says it best when he tells Hazel he loves her, because this isn’t just your cheesy I love you, it is the deep kind you only get once in your life. He teaches us to strive for the real love, no matter the circumstances. Love will conquer all.
So that’s it for you, the five best lines from the best novel of our time. They are all short in words, but deep in their meaning, and I hope you all find that from this reading.
