This summer I interned at a community newspaper, as I know many of my fellow journalism students have done. It is amazing how little the world knows about journalists and what it is like to be a college student studying journalism. Here are just a few of the phrases I've heard that I know would make all journalism students cringe.
"You know newspapers are dying right?"
Yes, I'm aware. But newspapers aren't the only place for journalists to work nowadays.
"Will you edit my paper?"
Will you pay me?
"Well anyone can be a journalist with the Internet."
Thank you for ruining my dreams.
"Any breaking news today?"
Do I look like a walking copy of the New York Times?
"Isn't technology ruining journalism?"
Technology is changing journalism, not ruining it.
"Good luck with that."
Ouch.
"You wrote this! *Points to article in paper.* What's it about?"
You could read it ...
"Do you like to write?"
I can't even with this question.
Luckily, for those of us at Ohio University (and other prestigious journalism schools) we also might get something similar to this:
"So you are in Scripps? Wow."
fYup, I'll always be #proud to be a Scripps kid.
