Some Things Incoming Freshman Should Keep In Mind

Just in case no one has told you anything yet.

Some Things Incoming Freshman Should Keep In Mind
Dan Bonasoro

We all can reflect in hindsight our freshman year of college. We all have things we would change, or not change. Things we would have never done at all and of course, things we wish we had done. Whatever those things are we all can find ourselves wishing we were told some things ahead of time that we had to find out by ourselves, the hard way. These are some of those things.

The First Week Can Be Kind Of Weird.

It is true. The first week can be weird. You have just moved in and are being thrown into a completely unknown element. However, there are ways to get through this. The first week is only as weird as you let it be. Don't let yourself be that person who shows their fear or awkwardness. Keep your head held high and everything will fall into place.

You Do Not Have All The Freedom In The World.

While it is true that you are more or less on your own, you are not free. You are still tied to your parents. Yes, you are completely right in thinking that you don't have to answer to them while at school doing your own thing, but don't forget about the people who got you to where you are.

Don't Abuse Said Freedom, Because You Will Want To.

Just because you have more freedom shouldn't mean you should do all the things you weren't allowed to do while your parents were around. They still have a way of finding out what goes on in your life and will find out. I'm not saying don't live a little, because you should as an adult, but, don't go on a crazy power spree with this new freedom.

First Semester Is Always The Toughest.

Upperclassmen may not agree but there's some truth to this one. You have just arrived on campus and don't know how college life and classed work. So on top of trying to figure all of this out, you have to deal with all of your classwork, making new friends, getting use to your living situations and everything else that comes with being a freshman. But don't worry! You'll get there.

Try New Things

This is your chance to do some things you've never done before or things you've been to shy to do before. Just think, you are around people you don't know and that don't know you. Take this opportunity to start fresh and branch out. You don't know whats out there until you get there and do it.

This list could go on forever and everyone you ask will always tell you something different but get out there! College doesn't have to be scary or nerve racking. Make it what you want it to be and enjoy it! You only get one freshman year, so make the best of it! I Know I did.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
