From the time I was in 2nd grade, I've known I wanted to be an educator. At that time, being such a young child, my reasoning was simple- I looked up to my teacher so much. I wanted to be just like her. As I've grown up, that reason has remained the same. However with experience some others have added. With this being said, here are some things Early Childhood Education Majors are tired of hearing, and why we're tired of it.
1. Being a teacher will make you not want to have kids of your own.
I just don't see this happening. While I understand the kids in your classroom in a way, become your children.. none of them will go home with me at night. None of this will call me mom. They will not be my blood. While I know I will love them so much, they still aren't my kids. I will be able to raise my kids how I want, these I can't.
2. You really want to work for someone else your whole life?
This one really confuses me, mostly because unless you own your own company.. you work for someone else. Argument invalid.
3. Good luck with all of those kids.
I chose this as my career. I chose this as what I wanted to do. When you tell me good luck, or to have fun with all of these kids... You do realize that the reason why I chose this profession is because of the children, right?
4. You're going to get paid nothing.
Money isn't everything. Yeah I understand you have to pay bills and all of that, but I would rather get paid a smaller amount and do something I am passionate about and enjoy, than be miserable my whole life. There is nothing I would rather do than teach. We also get benefits and breaks.
I was fortunate enough to be able to intern at an elementary for 2 years while in high school. I worked with a few different teachers who I was lucky enough to learn so much from. I still go back when I can, because I love doing it. I love walking into the class and getting hugs from the students, I love watching their eyes light up when they finally understand. I love getting to be apart of molding them into the person they will become
With this being said...
Thank you to all of the teachers I've had that have influcenced me on the way, and made me want to be just like you. Your hard work and love has helped mold me into who I am today. Thank you for making me want to teach.
I wouldn't have it any other way
