The other day in class, we were put into groups and told we had to make a drawing in 10 minutes. For some people, this assignment filled them with glee, but for others, myself included, this seemingly simple task filled us with dread. If you are one of the individuals in the latter group, you know that you face the impossible challenge of creating something that you know will be met with blank stares and confusion. You, my friend, are artistically challenged, and you are not alone. The following are just some of the sad situations you have experienced.
1. Spending an insane amount of time on a drawing only to be showed up by your artistic friend's last-minute doodle.
Whenever you get assigned an artistic project, you immediately realize you will be spending several hours or days completing the project, and even after slaving over it, the final product is, at best, mediocre. Your artistic friend, on the other hand, spends an hour on the project, and can whip out something that could be in a museum.
2. On several occasions, you have been asked, "Is that... a dog... or a cloud... or a heart?"
It's not any of those choices. It's a baby, which is evident from the single curl of hair on his head. Sorry for the confusion.
3. It amazes you when anyone uses anything other than a pencil to draw with.
It can be hard not to cringe when your friend starts drawing with a pen, but somehow they manage to pull together a seemingly perfect picture.
4. You sometimes tell people a child made your artwork to save yourself the embarrassment.
When your friend sees your art project sitting on your desk, you quickly lie and tell them your baby cousin made it for you, because to admit it is your own would be a fatal mistake. Did you draw this, or did a nine-year-old?
5. Stick figures are your go-to for drawing people.
While your friends figure out proportions and specific features, you just hope you manage to draw stick figures with even length arms.
6. While some people draw elaborate doodles in their notebook, yours is filled with the classic middle school "S."
Sure, you could try to draw some flowers or hearts, but why waste your time with some mediocre doodles, when you know you can count on the classic 6-line "S" from your childhood?
7. Whenever you do manage to create a decent picture, you proudly show it off to everyone.
For those 'once in a blue moon' situations, when you draw a truly beautiful picture, the excitement is simply impossible to contain, which leads you to present your artwork to anyone who even chances a glance.
8. Though you can't draw well, you have mastered the art of tracing.
There's an old saying that goes, "For those who can't do, teach." Whether or not this is true is debatable. However, all artistically challenged individuals know that "Those who can't draw, trace."
9. You can not even conceive how an artist such as Picasso or Van Gogh managed to create their masterpieces.
Whenever you are in a museum, you find yourself simply mystified that any of the great art even exists. How could someone translate such magnificent ideas to page and make it convincing?
10. When given a "Creative Project" you immediately know that you will have to use all the other talents you have to get even a decent grade.
When your professor assigns you a project that includes both a written and artistic element, you know very well that you will have to put in great detail to the written part, to make up for your downfalls on the artistic side.
11. You are beyond jealous of all of your artistic friends.
You may not feel hate for your artistic friends, but you will likely always feel somewhat slighted by the ease with which they can complete a sketch. However, do not be discouraged, because while you may lack talent in this scenario, you excel in others.
