Dr. Seuss once said “Everybody is a genius but if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing it is stupid."
The education system today requires every student to take general classes such as math, history, English, and science, and don't get me wrong- it is beneficial to have a general understanding of these subjects, but when standardized tests are forced into the classroom, the fun of learning lessens and is replaced with anxiety, cramming, and hoping and praying that you're prepared to pass these standardized tests.
Not only does the stress affect students, but teachers as well. Their class schedule is tight and every last minute is used in hopes that they can cover each topic in time to prepare students for testing because not only does the test determine the student's intelligence, but the teacher's effectiveness as well.
Here is the problem-not everyone is a good test taker. Some students have trouble focusing for a long period of time, some have trouble reading their tests, and some, like myself, have test taking anxiety. When it is all said and done, students are manipulated to believe that a test score determines their intelligence and their potential for success.
You see, while it may be important for my future that I take an extra math class or foreign language, it might not be necessary for my peers. In fact, it may be more beneficial to them to take horticulture and agriculture to transform them into successful farmers and vets. It may be beneficial for some to take strength and conditioning to become physically fit in preparation to serve our country. Some may benefit from music classes or theater that will propel them into acting careers or a career of performing on Broadway.
Learning would be more enjoyable if each day consisted of focusing on the things you enjoy and are good at instead of being crammed full of information that won't exactly benefit your future. We need to praise each individual strength instead of dwelling on their weakness. The very same student who I tutored in science is who I would go to if my car was broken down in the parking lot. The student who spends their school day in the greenhouse will one day be supplying the food to chain grocery stores. Someday I will be taking my animals to be cared for by the student who spent their day studying agriculture. I will be thanking those who spend a class period in the weight room for their sacrifice for our country. The potential is endless when you highlight strengths and allow students to focus on the things they are passionate about.
The education system needs to be fixed to stop allowing students to feel like a test score determines their potential. After all, you can't put a number on the things that matter like someone's character, their compassion, their humor, their bravery, etc.
So come on, fix it. Stop making the fish climb trees.
