I know it's hard to believe that there is someone who doesn't like Christmas, but here I am. I am not green, nor am I hairy or smelly but I am considered a "grinch." I know there are others out there that dread the Christmas season. So for those of you that can't fathom why, here you go...
1. All of the Noise, Noise, Noise...
As someone who works in retail, I know that right after Halloween all of the music in stores and on the radio stations turns to Christmas music. So for two months it is nonstop derivatives of the same original ten Christmas songs. Different languages, melodies, and tunes. I can understand the days leading up to Christmas the stores playing the music... but for two months? Is that necessary or have anything to due with the true meaning of Christmas? No.
2. All of the "Jolly" People
I know we have all dealt with people that try to out-do everyone else with their extravagant presents and gifts. Is that really sharing "holiday cheer?" I don't think so. In my opinion, people during Christmas time are the most selfish people all year long. Everyone's biggest concern is the gifts. "What am I getting for Christmas?" "What are you getting me for Christmas?" It's all about what people want during this time of the year. People pretending to be happy. Is that part of the true spirit of Christmas? No.
3. Traveling
As we all know, it is disastrous trying to travel during the holidays. I have friends at school that live in different countries and have to travel back home for winter break. It is very difficult for them to get home because of the prices during this time. Why? Because everyone is in such a rush to go wherever they have to go. The Christmas season has given airlines a reason to jack up their prices just because they know there will be such a high demand for traveling. As well as flying, the traffic is always ridiculous. Everyone is in such a rush to go wherever. Is this part of the essence of Christmas? No.
4. The Attire
I know everyone thinks that the ugly Christmas sweaters are super cool and funny but every time I see one, I just imagine a grandma wearing that same sweater with her jingle bell earrings that jingle in her stretched earlobes every time she turns her head. And seriously people? Sweaters that light up? That's definitely a fire hazard. Sure, they're amusing but gee-wiz. Is that really a good idea? Is this really a true quality of Christmas? No.
5. All of the Misunderstanding
Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy the occasional Christmas cookie, but I believe that a lot of the Christmas hype has nothing at all to do with what Christmas is really about. It's funny, in a lot of Christmas movies (that are repeated every single year, multiple times a year) there is a character trying to discover the true meaning of Christmas. Then why is everything people do around the holiday season the complete opposite of what they should be doing? Literally because of one day, we have all of this chaos. Yet that one day is dragged out for two months. I personally only celebrate Christmas on December 25th with my family. We exchange a few gifts and spend time together. Because at the end of the day, it's the memories of being together that I'll remember, not the gifts.
"'Maybe Christmas' he thought, 'doesn't come from a store.' Maybe Christmas... perhaps... means a little bit more.'"
