The thoughts of a global studies and social justice major

I Want To Help Others, Travel And Spread Peace
Katie DeClue

I have switched my major many times. From English to psychology, then back to English, and then to business, and finally to liberal arts with a concentration in global studies and social justice and responsibility. I chose to major in liberal arts with these concentrations because I want to possibly work for a non-profit organization and help change the world. I also want to travel and experience life in other countries. But mostly, I want to make a difference in the world.

I have wanted to travel ever since I was a kid. My maternal grandparents traveled a lot since they were both retired and shared a mutual interest in it. They would always show my sisters and I pictures from their travels and brought us souvenirs. They were the ones who probably gave me the wanderlust trait. I remember in middle school taking French because I was a so-called Francophile. I even had a phase where I wanted to have a perfect, glamorous life where I lived in London. I know that is probably unlikely to happen, but a girl can dream, right?

I suppose I should thank my mom for suggesting I major in liberal arts since she saw that I was struggling with being a business major. Let's be honest who really wants to take accounting classes? While my mom and I are on board with this major even though I was skeptical at first, my dad is not the most convinced. I'm pretty sure he wants me to major in something practical like business. Ugh. I have this awesome idea/plan to join the Peace Corps after college so that I can travel and help others. Again, I think my dad is less than thrilled with this idea but I think it's a perfect fit for me once I graduate.

I want to travel. I want to live abroad. I want to help others. I want to leave my mark on the world. I want to throw peace and love around like confetti. A few of my Facebook friends have voiced an opinion that I agree with and to put it simply we hate the violence going on. I hate that I have to live in the world where I wake up one morning and hear about a random shooting that occurred. I want literal "peace on earth." I don't want to be afraid that something like that could happen where I live. Maybe part of the reason I want to hep others is because I want to help promote peace.

My school is pretty awesome. It offers my major and it helped me decide what I am passionate about. Thank you Cottey College for offering my major and helping me find my passion. Thank you for the awesome spring break trip to another country that helps fuels my travel bug. Thanks for being an amazing and wonderful school I am proud to go to.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
