If you have the luxury of growing up with thick hair, there is a 50 percent chance that you have curly hair as well. It is possible to have thick hair that is not curly hair, which is reserved for the other half of thick haired population. Either way, if you grew up with thick or curly hair, or better yet, both, you will understand the following struggles.
Everyone wants to have your hair.
This one is for all my curly haired girls. Every time you meet someone new, most of the time they say how much they love your hair and want to have it and of course the only thing have to say to that is NO YOU DO NOT. You could never understand why anyone would want to deal with having the worlds thickest hair. If anything, YOU wanted to have THEIR hair. Thin, smooth, silky and straight. I guess we all want what we don't have.
CONDITIONER.
Every girl who has thick girl knows that in the time we go through a single bottle of shampoo, we go through two or more bottles of conditioner. Oh, and the rule to only use dime sized squirt of conditioner does not apply to us. A dime size will not cover all of the hair that I have.
Straightening your hair takes hours.
Yes, it does look amazing in the end, but when it takes two to three hours to get it looking perfect, you begin to wonder if it is even worth it. When I complain about my hair, people always say to me "Have you tried straightening it?" Yes. Yes I have. It takes hours, thank you very much. I always feel bad for my hairdresser because she always needs to rest her arms when she finishes with me. I am sorry to anyone who has ever really tried to deal with my hair. And here is a little advice...don't get caught in the rain after you straighten your hair. All your hard work...gone.
"Did you brush your hair?"
No mom, I did not. Maybe that is because when I do, I look like this:
There is a BIG difference between curly hair and curled hair.
To begin, let me clarify. This is what curly hair looks like:
This is what curled hair looks like:
There is a HUGE difference. Curly hair is natural. Curled hair is NOT natural and is done by using a curling iron. I felt the need to clarify because there is nothing I hate more than people saying that they have curly hair when they don't!
Brushing it out hurts. Really bad.
Whether you use a comb or a brush, it hurts because somehow you always have knots. I remember as a kid I could always end up screaming and crying because it hurt.
There are so many more struggles about having thick and curly hair. I'm sure that at one point or another, I broke a comb. Also, having thick hair, you shed it a lot and you find your hair all over the place. There is also not much that you can do with it, meaning you can't do many different styles. Lately, I have been getting treatments for my hair. I did keratin for a while but it never worked much. I recently tried out a Brazilian straightening, which made my hair permanently straight. Yup, I said it. Permanent. Well, not forever permanent, but permanent for a while...until the treatment grows out and my roots come back in curly. I love this because while I can have the straight hair for a long time, if I ever choose to, I can always go back to curly if I want! However for the moment being, I enjoy my hair being straight because it is so much easier to deal with. However, I do miss my hair curly, just the tiniest bit. Again, we always think the grass is greener on the other side.
