The Struggle To Find A Summer Job

College kids are home but the jobs aren't there.

The Struggle To Find A Summer Job
Her Campus

In high school, we all got random jobs to earn some side cash. We needed to save for college. We needed to pay for gas. We needed to pay to keep our social life alive. Then, you enter your freshman year of college and you think your savings will get you through. But, one too many late-night Sonic runs later, your savings are looking a little pathetic.

Soon, you’ll feel the need to work. Your parents shoot that idea down real quick because they think your studies are more important. You think maybe they will let you get a campus job but you quickly realize those are all taken. Then, you try to find somewhere that will be flexible with your class hours and sorority schedule (do those jobs even exist?). Finally, you resort to budgeting every week to the last penny. You find yourself only eating in the dining halls and missing out on events with friends because you need to pay your monthly subscription for Netflix. Priorities, right?

You think, "If only I can make it to summer." During the summer, you can work every day and save up all over again.

It's not that easy.

Summer jobs are not easy to come by. You think that places would be hiring because college kids have gone home and high schoolers need a break. But, what you don’t realize, is that restaurants and businesses don’t want to take the time to hire and train a seasonal worker just for them to leave in three months.

I have applied for countless jobs. I have looked into frozen yogurt places, pizza places, restaurants, sports bars, coffee shops and even retail. Any place you can apply to, I’ve submitted an application.

Now, all I can do is wait. After applying, following up with a phone call, and even going to the place, the best thing to do is to wait. You don’t want to seem too eager no matter how qualified you are for the job. My dad has told me, "It’s not anything that you have done that caused them not to call for an interview." It could all be timing.

In the end, don't give up. Keep looking. The perfect job could be right around the corner. Continue to have a positive attitude and stay calm. The last thing you want to do is rush into a bad decision or even a bad job because you did not think thoroughly or carefully. If job searching isn't going the way you want, take a day off and relax. You could be working yourself too hard already.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
