As a Florida native, we experience times of the year where getting around becomes somewhat of a challenge. During the holiday times especially, we Floridians see it all. The reason behind all this madness is simply the migration of the "snowbirds." These so-called snowbirds don't enjoy the cold up north. So they come to sunny South Florida to get a glimpse of our year-round tropics that we Floridians are so lucky to have.
1. Traffic jams galore.
The attempt to go anywhere is a struggle within itself. Due to the immense amount of cars on the roads, not hitting traffic is inevitable. Trust me, one-hour drives to Miami can quickly turn into two hours, if not more. Make sure to start the journey to your destination way in advance and especially not during prime rush hour times, if not you may experience something called a road trip!
2. The rarity of parking spots.
Don't think that finding a parking spot is going to be easy. With schools out and Snowbirds here, these parking lots fill up fast. Make sure to leave your house at least 15 minutes prior to when you would usually leave just to ensure you get a parking spot. Or else, you'll be taking a bit of a walk.
3. The wait of fine dining.
Honestly, plan on eating home for the next few weeks. Trying to get into your favorite restaurant is near to impossible due to the high demand to eat at all the top restaurants in the area. Save yourself time, money, and just stay home.
4. Snowbirds... everywhere.
Boy oh boy, snowbirds let me tell you, if you think Florida is busy when schools are out on a random day, you are in for a treat. Being a Floridian we experience prime weather a majority of the time, but these "Snowbirds," don't. Up north, it starts to get a bit chilly for people's liking and Florida is the place to be in their eyes.
5. Shopping is madness.
Holiday season being the most hectic time to shop makes going to the mall impossible. I advise you to stay far, far away from any store. No matter where you go and what time you do it, the madness of people trying to find their loved ones that "perfect holiday gift" makes the stores overwhelming and messy.
6. Reserving a prime sun spot.
Florida is known for its incredible weather. Every person that is on break or has a free weekend is bound to lounge at a pool or tan at the beach on a nice warm day. With that, finding your perfect tanning spot can be somewhat of a challenge. If you are trying to go back to school or up north with a nice tan glow, my best advice to you is to get to the pool or beach bright and early to ensure that perfect spot.
