It always happens...the virus gets spread around your campus and next thing you know, you are sick. Being sick used to mean getting to miss school and not having a care in the world about what you missed. Well, unfortunately once you get to college, being sick is the worst thing that could happen.
You wake up to start a fresh new day at school and you realize you can't get out of bed. "Oh no, not again" you say to yourself. You will do anything in your power to just get to that class and sit through it so you do not have to deal with missed work. You email your teachers explaining why you missed class, but they barely will answer. I love my teachers, but when it comes down to being sick, they are not the greatest. You have to rely on your friends more and ask them what you missed because some teachers refuse to tell you. To them, it's our responsibility that we are laying in bed to get the missed work. Do they know that we feel so guilty for missing one day worth of classes? Well, I do for that matter.
As the day creeps on by, you think about everything you are missing and if your teacher will let you make up the quiz that you missed. Why does it feel like we get punished for missing class even when we are really sick? Your phone keeps buzzing as all your friends and teachers begin to email you about what you missed or just emails about assignments. I have no idea what these assignments are because I did not attend class, so why are the teachers emailing it to me? Being sick is already horrible as it is, so being bombarded with assignments is not the best mood booster.
By mid-afternoon, you are not getting any better and the last thing you want to do is sit down and complete homework. But, in college, you just have to push through it and get the work done before the drop box closes. You have no one to complain to because all your friends are out enjoying the nice day, so you usually just call your parents. I miss the old days when missing school meant your parents will pick up all your homework and there were no penalties involved for missing school. For me, I am getting sick at least twice in a school year, so I am almost used to this nonsense.
Teachers need to adjust to a student when they are sick and change the workload for that day. I understand that it is college, but we are all human and sometimes your brain cannot even function when you're sick. Just keep telling yourself that you will be okay and that eventually you will catch up on everything you missed. Missing one day feels like you missed half of a semester.
