The Struggle Between Thanksgiving and Christmas

Waiting for a break to come has always been a distraction to people in school; it does not get any easier when you get into college. Actually, the anticipation of break becomes worse the older you get because the workload is greater and more demanding.

1. You struggled through August to late November.

You waited soooo long to get from the beginning of the semester to Thanksgiving break. You started breaking down your remaining sentence until Thanksgiving by weeks, and when it was 6 weeks away you started counting down the days till you could GTFO!

2. You finally got to go home!!!!

You ate your weight in turkey and mashed potatoes, you had the luxury of ignoring all responsibilities, you had home cooked meals, you slept in a very comfortable bed and you loved every second of it.

3. Sunday came and you dreaded going back to school.

You saw your family and friends, you were in your hometown and it felt so good! But then you realized Sunday morning that you were heading back to campus in a few hours and it sucks! But you get back to campus and all you want to do is sleep; so you do.

4. Monday.

Everyone’s least favorite day ever. But it is so much worse right after Thanksgiving break. You’ve realized you have 20 days or less until you’re home yet and in those 20 days, your life is work, work, work, work, work.

5. Procrastination.

Projects, papers, tests, finals, study sessions are all happening and it is stressful; but its 10 times easier to ignore your responsibilities and watch Netflix compared to actually starting your work. You justify your procrastination telling yourself the whole time it’ll be fine and you have time. You have 20 days…ok, 10…ok, 6…oh sh*t everything it due tomorrow.

6. There’s always that one kid who isn’t struggling.

Like what???? This kid is sleeping 8 hours a night, they haven’t gotten stress headaches, they’re eating right. They somehow managed their time well enough to have essays done, they’re evenly studying for their finals, like what? How????????

7. You’re over-freaking-whelmed.

You can’t not think about Christmas. There are commercials, carols, and snow (depending on where you’re located). All you want for Christmas is it to be freaking Christmas!!!!! But, don’t forget all that work in between.

8. You have your mental breakdown.

Pulling too many all-nighters, having way too many assignments due on literally the same day, and packing for a month-long break all while studying. It’s hard. You mentally start to crack and you’re totally not alone.

9. The deadlines hit.

THEY’RE HERE. HOLY HELL. OMG. THEY’RE FREAKING HERE. DID YOU GET EVERYTHING DONE ON TIME? Yes. Yes, you did (hopefully).

10. You get to go home.

After the last final, you sprint out of there, get on your mode of transportation and leave! The hardest 20 days of your life are over (until next semester between Spring Break and Summer). But for now, all you can do it go home and enjoy your month off; responsibility free.

And now you get to go home, see your friends and family, and be in your own bed for a month. Maybe you have a job, maybe you take a winter session course; honestly, it doesn’t matter. Anything is better than being at school; for a little while.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
