The Urban Dictionary defines 'hipster' as a subculture of men and women typically in their 20's and 30's that value independent thinking, counter-culture, progressive politics, an appreciation of art and indie-rock, creativity, intelligence, and witty banter.
The most slippery thing about defining hipsterism is that everyone rejects the label. I have never met one person who accepts that he or she may, in fact, be a hipster. After carefully reviewing the interests and behaviors of other hipsters, I will admit that I myself, am a hipster. Maybe someday, other hipsters will come out of the closet and embrace their own hipster identities. These are the ways of how I knew I was a hipster:
1. Music
Mostly I’ll listen to bands that no one has heard of or are before my time. While most are listening to Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, and Justin Bieber, I look through my records collections and play bands like the Beatles, Nirvana, the Smashing Pumpkins, and Oasis. Plus a sizable dose of 80s and 90s hip-hop.
2. Fashion
My choice of fashion has definitely raised some eyebrows. Some say my taste in fashion is a mixture of hippie counterculture (or some like to call it “boho”), goth, and grunge. My closet is packed with flannel and band tees, as well as sweatshirts, leggings, tie-dye, and all black clothing.
3. Tattoos and Piercings
I’ve got quite a few piercings. No tattoos yet although I have a long list of designs in mind.
4. Diet
I’m not vegan, but almost everything I eat is either no meat or dairy, organic, non-GMO, or grass-fed. I usually drink cheap beer and wine or exclusively local microbrews. I used to go crazy for anything avocado until it became too mainstream.
5. Miscellaneous
Some of my hobbies include pottery and photography. I mentioned earlier that I have a record collection. In my opinion, music sounds better when it’s played on vinyl.
You will most likely see me hanging out at local coffee shops, farmers markets and co-ops, used bookstores, record stores, museums, and galleries.
Although hipsters get a bad rep among society, I will embrace being a hipster girl. Hipsters are some of the most interesting people you will ever meet because they reject the societal norms. You will never have a boring conversation with a hipster because they will talk about unique topics like art, film, and music. The next time someone calls you a hipster, embrace it!
