Thanksgiving break is finally upon us! Finally, a break from classes for the day. A lot of students count down the days until Thanksgiving, and others groan. There are a lot of great things that come from Thanksgiving break, and as always, some downsides.
Pro: A nice home-cooked meal, and a big one.
Thanksgiving dinner is the college kid's dream. A huge, free, home-cooked meal.
Pro: Leftovers
It goes with the big meal territory, and in most families, college students come back to campus with Tupperware stuffed full of the Thanksgiving goodness to savor instead of the typical ramen and pizza.
Con: For some, it's a nuisance to go home.
Thanksgiving break is only two days long, and for those who go to school out of state or far from home, the drive just isn't worth it. Who wants to drive 16 hours round-trip for a weekend when Christmas break is two weeks away? Not many. For those who can't go home, campus is absolutely empty, and some students living in the dorms struggle with where they're going to stay.
Con: The dreaded family conversations
Every college student knows that family get together events are really just interrogations. Family members rattle off the typical college question that nobody is really prepared to answer (and being reminded that you're single three times over dinner is never pleasant), and all you can think about is how to get enough food in your mouth to not be able to respond. For some, college was a place to blossom, and the family may not be ready for the liberal feminist walking into a room of conservatives.
Pro: Reconnecting with the family
Being away at college makes it hard to always keep in contact with the fam. Being home for Thanksgiving gives you time to get back in touch with all of the relatives you really miss, but just don't always have the time to call.
Con: Having to go back to school, for two weeks
Thanksgiving is a great break for college students, this education stuff is hard. But with finals fast approaching, many of us have to spend our time home with our noses in the books. This weekend is such a tease to what Christmas break has to offer, it's almost painful to go back.
Pro: Celebrating the holidays with the ones you love
Nothing beats quality family time, and a free meal.
