WARNING: Spoilers ahead, do not watch if you are currently watching "One Tree Hill," "Grey's Anatomy," "How I Met Your Mother," "Make It or Break It," or "Gossip Girl."
We may not notice it, but it plays a big role in the television shows we watch. Imagine watching your favorite Netflix show without music playing in the background. Music has such a powerful influence and can make or break a scene. Picture it, sitting in your room, watching Netflix and a scene comes on where your characters experience a big moment in the season and you start to get chills. Looking back on the scene, you realize what made the scene so great was the music behind it and for the rest of the day you would have the song stuck in your head. My iPhone is full of music I have found through some of my favorite scenes. So without further ado, here is a list of my top five favorite songs and the scenes they made so memorable.
1. "One Tree Hill" - Season 7, Episode 7, "I and Love and You"
Song: "I and Love and You" (Avett Brothers)
I had never heard of this song until I watched this episode, but it quickly became my go-to song. This song is beautiful and hits the hearts of all the OTH fans as they all finally learn about Clay’s past and his beautiful wife, Sarah, who tragically passed away too early. The song is about moving on from the love of your life, which corresponds perfectly with the scene that shows Clay struggling to move on from his dead wife. *tear*2. "Grey's Anatomy" - Season 11, Episode 23, "She’s Leaving Home Part 2"
This wonderful rendition of "Chasing Cars" by Snow Patrol is about two people who love each other but cannot be together. Although I already knew the song before this episode I had never heard it by The Wind and the Wave and their rendition is hauntingly beautiful. As we watch Meredith bring her children back to her house after Derek’s tragic death (thanks a lot, Shonda Rhimes) we cannot help but tear up (or sob) as we watch Meredith look around her bedroom at all the memories of her and Derek knowing that the two of them will never be together again. A video montage of flashbacks and memories of Meredith and Derek plays as the song softly yet powerfully plays in the background as millions of girls cry as if, they too, had just lost their hot surgeon husband.
3. "How I Met Your Mother" - Season 8, Episode 1, "Farhampton"
This is by far one of my favorite scenes ever. After watching this episode, I immediately went to iTunes and bought this song. This song perfectly fits the scene as Klaus poetically describes to Ted what true love is. The scene pans to Marshall and Lily (relationship goals), Barney and Quinn, and Robin who broken-heartedly looks at pictures of her and Barney, her one true love. It is in this moment that Ted learns that he has not yet found his lebenslangerschicksalsschatz despite all his efforts of trying to find love.
4. "Make It or Break It- Season 1, Episode 10, "All that Glitters"

For those who don’t know, the show "Make It or Break It" was a short-lived television show on ABC Family about a group of gymnasts in Boulder, Colorado who trained to be on the Olympic team. This song plays in the season finale of the first season where three of the four girls make it onto the national gymnastics team. The song starts playing as the announcer announces to the crowd that the last contestant to make it onto the national team is the last teammate, Emily. It is a joyous song as the girls celebrate but quiets down as the girls go confront their fourth teammate who injured herself during the tryout. This song fills the audience with the feeling that they can go conquer anything they put their mind to.
5. "Gossip Girl" - Season 2, Episode 25, "Goodbye Gossip Girl"
This song is the perfect song to be playing when Chuck tells Blair he loves her for the first time FINALLY. Such a big moment calls for a perfect song and what could be better than Seasons of Love where Shiny Toy Guns sings the word “love” over and over as Chuck finally says “I love you too.”
