The limits of music are only at the discretion of the artist. Slider does not limit their creativity . Their unique identity, style and approach to every song cannot be defined by just one genre.
Slider claims the identity of contemporary rock with progressive influence, yet the whole point of the genre is to write music outside the normative. One might hear influences from Paramore in Slider’s music as the lead singer is female, an emphasis of hard rock melodies, and ever changing counts to distinguish their music from the standard four count heard in most songs.
I was introduced to Marcus Warner from a member of the band Arcane Atlas, Slider’s rival band. Marcus has had an exceptional career in music from production, placing bands together based on similar styles, to working on this phenomenal progressive rock group, Slider.
The idea of Slider was conceived in May 2014, and the formation of what would become a well-organized band was fully developed in October 2014 with lead singer Mariah Schneider from Germany, Kyle Hanson, the exceptionally talented bass player, Marcus Warner, the multifaceted guitar and keyboard player, and Caleb Powell, the always Travis Barker of progressive rock.
Together, Slider has been able to produce many demos, ranging from their hit songs “Beauty And The Beast” and “Home,” each providing the powerful voice of Mariah back by both rhythmic beats, and head banging guitar and bass playing. On the ultimate goal of the band, Warner states, “We want to sound like anyone has heard before.” Hanson furthered in confidence, saying, “We are mixing elements of prog rock into a duality of mesmerizing sounds and something that everyone will be lost in.”
Even the band’s name is a story so simple yet unheard. Schneider told me how she was traveling in a car home, and she was looking out the window. She noticed that as the car passed under street lamps, the light would keep going out. According to scientists, street light interference, SLI, occurs when the frequency changes due to some form of disturbance.
Part of the band’s name was formed, and it was finished with the suffix –er alluding to “sliding” under the light when driving. Under the newly formed band name, Slider played several shows and is pushing to play at places like The End, The Basement East and The High Watt. The band has large aspirations with one of their dream being to go on tour after getting their name out.
Undoubtedly, Slider is bringing a unique spin to not only progressive rock but also the music industry. Their youth brings energy, their creativity encapsulates their story, and their drive to be different captures the meaning of making music.
