Stephen King once wrote: “Time takes it all, whether you want it to or not. Time takes it all, time bears it away, and in the end there is only darkness. Sometimes we find others in that darkness, and sometimes we lose them there again.”
You may ask yourself, when? When will I start to feel better? Or how... How can I make myself move past this? But the truth is you aren’t the one who necessarily decides that, time does. Time decides when it is OK to move forward, when it’s necessary.
Time is a funny thing. Time can help you remember certain things and time has a way of helping your forget as well. There are certain memories of my childhood that are a little blurry, yet I can remember all the lyrics to a song I heard once 10 years ago. There are certain people who have crossed my path that I’ll always remember and one’s whom I forgot. But time? Time keeps the people who are meant to be close to your heart, in your heart forever.
10:01. 10:01 is the exact time I received a call from my brother on January 30, 2006. He called me to tell me that my uncle had lost his battle with Emphysema and he had passed away. I remember everything from that day.
Time is what helps me remember that day as it has now become etched in stone. March 1, 2016, a day unlike any other. I was headed to my brother and sister-in-law's house to babysit my niece, but once I walked inside the smile on my face had slowly disappeared. March 1. A day that I sat down on the couch surrounded by my parents, my sister-in-law and my niece, when I was told the news that my best friend had passed away.
Time. How much time? How little? The questions I keep asking myself. When will I be okay? When will I accept this? What I have learned over the past two months is that you cannot push yourself through time. One foot in front of the other, one movement, one memory, one moment at a time. Time is what has hurt me and yet time is what has helped heal me.
So, again you may ask yourself. How can I get through this? How much time does it take to grieve the loss of a loved one? Well, I for one am still figuring that out. As I walk this path of life, I remember the memories as they are so vivid in my mind. I concentrate on the good, rather than the bad. Time is what keeps the memories alive.
If I could offer out any advice, it would be to cherish the people in your life. Tell them you love them, show them you care. Do not wait until it is too late to express your feelings. We are now. We are in the present and the present is a gift. Do not take advantage of it, embrace it.
After all, time takes it all - whether you want it to or not. So what are you going to do with your time?
