For those of you who don’t me, I am a musician and am currently studying as a Music Business Major. I truly believe the best thing I can do as a musician is surround myself with music as much as possible. For me, attending concerts is the ultimate experience to immersing myself into what I love. Over the years, I’ve learned that concerts can be life changing if you allow them to be.
I’ve been to countless concerts, each one completely different from the previous. That’s the beauty about them. Each is going to make you feel something completely different. Each one makes you learn a little bit more about yourself and about others.
This past July, I attended a concert by myself. I can confidently say that I never enjoyed a concert more than that one. I had gotten my hands on a VIP soundcheck experience ticket for one of my favorite bands. From 12pm to 12am I was in a venue filled with fans all there to hear and talk to a band that in someway made an impact on their lives as well.
I know that attending a concert alone can be intimidating and seem somewhat scary but it does not have to be and I learned that so quickly during my experience.
I spent quite a few hours waiting in lines before the pre-show soundcheck and Q&A. I right away made friends with the people around me. Afterall, we all had at least something in common since we were all standing in the same line for the same band.
I made it my mission to get to know these people and find out what this band meant to them.
My conclusion? Music has the power to give a voice to the ones who feel like they don’t have a voice at all. Music brings us together. Music saves lives.
Some people may think I’m crazy for saying that, some may completely agree. Going to this concert alone meant so much more to me than hearing the music I loved. I had the chance to be surrounded by strangers who by the end of the night were not strangers at all. Pretty amazing right?
As I stood at my seat, I closed my eyes and took it all in. The sounds, the air, the screams, the lyrics. Music is about the personal connection and feeling you get from it. It’s about the people you meet through it. It’s about the love it has the ability to spread. It’s about living in the moment and forgetting about our daily struggles for a few hours.
Attending that concert alone helped me realize why I feel the way I do about music and why I want it as my career. I get asked all the time why I’m going after a career that is hard to succeed in. I guess there’s no exact worded answer, it’s more of a feeling.
Go to a concert alone, close your eyes, and describe your emotions in that very moment. That feeling is my answer.
