The Irony Of Love

A different perspective on the misuse and reality of the word love.

The Irony Of Love
Justin Robertson

The word love quite honestly holds the title of the most ironic word in the English dictionary. Let's begin, we tell family members, friends, animals, and significant others that we love them, but when there is a falling out; we escape the meaning of love. The definition for the word love is, "a feeling of strong or constant affection for a person." However, the word love means a lot more than a feeling of strong affection towards another being. It goes with a promise of protection, support, acceptance and unity. The irony with the word 'love' is that, as soon as there becomes a falling out with something or someone, we immediately break the promise that we once vowed never to do. That is to leave, abandon, scurry away and leave the other empty handed and alone to fix the puzzle.

Nobody knows when it will happen but, we all know that we will end up with someone for the rest of our lives. We will meet, fall in love, get married and start a family. The mystery that comes along with it is, we don't know when we will meet that other piece. The rare ones can begin as soon as grade school and some are high school sweethearts but, the reality is after we leave college and enter the real world. Even then however; we still face the intense scarring issue of people committing adultery and breaking the connection between loved ones.

Adultery occurs when we're in grade school and your "girlfriend" or "boyfriend" hugs another person, spends time with someone else or even kisses someone else. Up the ladder this continues into high school with intensified ways of cheating rather than a hug on the playground. Then, there becomes adultery when you're married with a family. Someone that you vowed to spend the rest of your life with and care for, you decide to break that connection and commit the most devilish and scummy crime ever.

It's mind blowing how we can flip flop from one thing to another in a matter of seconds. We say things but perform different actions, we're together with people and then act like we don't even know them. The reality of the situation is, we live in a world where the word which is meant to have so much meaning and infinite power becomes over used and loses its touch such as the word like.

I have been on the receiving end of what it looks like when someone throws away the meaning of love, and I am sure millions of others have been on this road before. The way I enjoy looking at it is, that I can find time for myself and learn what I am truly interested in. I now have the opportunity to take a look at my career and fulfill my dreams. People don't need love to succeed, and while it may seem like eternal happiness, the actuality of it is; it holds the most irony out of any other word in the English dictionary.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
