If you turn on the radio, you hear the extremely fun and catchy music of pop culture icon and artists Taylor Swift, Katy Perry, Pink and Usher, to name a few. Like many, I play the songs in my car and jam out on my way to work, garnering perplexed looks from other drivers. But after awhile, those songs get old because they are constantly played over and over again. This is not an article to trash or criticize any pop music icons. Their talents and achievement are reflected in sold out concerts with fan bases of millions of fans, young and old. This is an article to praise the artists that otherwise are not played often on major regional radio stations.
In a modern culture of rave and party music and of songs about breakups and getting back at exes, I believe that there is a serious lack of a message that transcends just music and inspires us or tells a powerful story or message. These are songs that have a definitive soul to them, which can touch the hearts of many. To me, the same songs that we hear over and over again are cycled on pop radio stations. These unheard artists will one day become some of the artists and songs of our generation. We must not forget about the independent artists whose songs may not always play on the radio but add to the cultural and artistic landscape of the United States. These indie artists offer depth to American culture by offering stories and arising inner feelings.
Here are a few songs worth listening to:
Hozier, "From Eden"
An artist who recently came into the spotlight in this year’s past Grammy Award Show, Hozier represents a return to soul music. Born and raised in Ireland, he became popular in 2013 with his hit "Take Me To Church." The song's popularity traveled over to the United States and has struck a chord with many younger listeners. His song "From Eden" speaks to the tragic and lonesome side of love. With that, he draws references to the Fall in the Garden of Eden and relates it to the death of chivalry.
Band of Horses, "The Great Salt Lake"
Following the great tradition of inventive music to come from Seattle, Band of Horses formed in the mid-2000s but gained popularity in small music circles in only the recent decade. Their style draws from impassioned lyrics and rhythmic chords.
Vance Joy, "Georgia"
Vance Joy came into the music world with his song, "Riptide." Hailing from Australia, he represents a growing movement of indie rockers from abroad. His music infuses various elements of instruments like ukuleles and drums. He attributes his individual style to other solo singers such as Bob Dylan and George Harrison.
George Ezra, "Breakaway"
Another young artist, George Ezra has gained international fame with his single, "Budapest." Being the same age as me, it’s inspirational to see someone work at their craft to perfection.
Bon Iver, "Skinny love"
Bon Iver’s distinct folk sound has gained them a decent following. Their songs reflect the imagery of old folk stories and legends as well as empathize with love and heartbreak and a desire to find beauty.
City and Colour, "The Girl"
The band's unique tempo is unlike that of other rock bands. Between different chords, the tempo increases and decreases. They also implrmrny amazing instrumentals and their vocals.
