Feb. 28, 2016 is a day that will go down in history as the day Leonardo DiCaprio finally won his oscar. DiCaprio triumphed over some of Hollywood’s finest actors to be crowned Best Actor in a Leading Role, receiving a standing ovation from the crowd, as well as finally being able to take home his golden trophy.
Chris Rock hosted an Oscars that was, well… pretty much just like the rest of them. If you love anything about film then it was easy to sit through the three and a half hours of acceptance speeches, cheesy jokes and “wrap it up”-music, but if you aren’t then you didn’t need to tune in until about three hours in. That being said, it was quite interesting to see how the night unfolded.
"Mad Max: Fury Road" won six out of its 10 nominations, claiming the most wins of any movie nominated. This movie took home awards for film editing, costume design, makeup and hairstyling, sound mixing, sound editing, and production design. While winning all of these awards it did miss out on the one big award - Best Motion Picture. But just because it didn’t win, does not mean it wasn’t one of the best movies of the year.
"Spotlight" was named Best Motion Picture of the Year, which for many came as a surprise after seeing how well "Mad Max" had been doing that night.
Pixar again won Best Animated Feature for "Inside Out," proving they still know exactly how to make movies that everyone loves. "Inside Out" became the seventh movie produced by Pixar to win an Oscar.
Despite not being nominated, African-Americans had a big presence during the entirety of the show. From Chris Rock's opening monologue to the final award, #OscarsSoWhite was the main joke of the evening, which in my opinion did more progress for the black community than boycotting it would have. By poking fun at a serious issue, I think this shows how resilient the black community is. It showed the Academy their mistakes and it gave them a chance to make things right in the years to come.
While there might have been actual winners and loser during the night, in reality no one lost. Everyone there got a chance to show the world their skill in filmmaking and they all came through with flying colors.
