The amount of Christmas themed garb that's flooding the corporate industry isn't a thrill to everyone and that's perfectly understandable. Any retail worker can empathize with the lack of mirth you may feel. So for everyone out there, myself included, here's 5 reason as to why it's ok to be the Grinch for Christmas.
1. Halloween just ended and Thanksgiving is getting skipped over
All Hallows' eve feels like it happened yesterday and plenty of people, kids, and adults alike have leftover candy they're hiding away as mint products start to fill the shelves. Everyone seems to be bypassing Thanksgiving again, not that anyone's really complaining. The feast before the Christmas festivities is once again taking a back seat to scenes being set up across the nation. Christmas music is playing nonstop and radio stations are infected around five to six weeks straight.
2. Shopping
The next thought on everyone's mind, even if they don't celebrate Christmas, is who's getting what. Most college kids are working off of a budget and the mood sinks as your wallet shrinks three sizes. Even if you aren't on a budget the question of who to even get gifts for in your friend group is boggling, to say the least. The even planning out when everyone's getting their gifts and what to get them anyway. Regardless of your attachment to your friends, you still can't seem to think of what to get them, so you don't set the bar too high or too low for next year.
3. Nostalgia
The amount of emotions attached to the entire holiday is overwhelming, to say the least. The warm fuzzy feelings of older memories clashing with new disappointments when the new experience doesn't match with times when you were a kid. The reality is that no holiday will ever match your expectations if you reach towards the sky. The family traditions made over time lose their luster.
4. Hallmark movies
They're not exactly high budget and they're on repeat for hour after hour. You watch the same films every year. Santa and reindeer-themed movies are on repeat with the feel-good movies directly after. The time spent watching these movies every year could be much better spent talking to relatives you haven't seen or even just catching up with parents.
5. The decorations
Picking out a tree takes time in the cold outside and finding the perfect one has to meet a set list of requirements. Getting it inside is a whole other issue that resembles team building exercises minus the cursing and unneeded anger. Trees shed needles that you'll be finding until next Christmas. Decorations take another hour or so without untangling lights. Mom or Dad have somehow become Martha Stewart with home decorations made with hot glue and glitter that gets stuck on clothing.
To conclude, there is plenty of reason to be apathetic to Christmas and the holidays altogether. But somewhere way deep down, there's a fraction of you that at least appreciates the people you spend it with.
