As the dog days of summer creep up, it's hard not to shed a tear. Every year, the days seem to go by faster and faster. As we enjoy the last true month of August, and before we dive into pumpkin spice lattes and knit sweaters, let's appreciate the roller coaster of emotions we feel as we see target begin to line its halls with school supplies. So, here is the last month of summer, told by the only cast who can truly express how we are feeling: "The Office."
1. When you have to change your calendar from July to August
The days seem to slowly dwindle as you realize you have a mere 31 days to check off everything on your summer bucket list. At this point, you're not sure if it's even worth it to try and catch a summer sunrise on the beach or whether you should just continue to sleep until 11.
2. Realizing that you'll have to get used to an 8 a.m. schedule again
If nothing else, we always take for granted those days when you wake up without an alarm and check and see that it's already 11:30. August is just a reminder that soon you'll have to get back to that everyday school schedule, and actually, have to do something productive with your life.
3. When you check the school website to see all the summer homework you have yet to start
It's a sad, sad day when you come to realize that you have not just one, but four books to read in order to be prepared for back to school. An even sadder day is when Barnes and Noble doesn't have the book you're looking for, so you have to order them online.
4. When someone asks if you have started applying to schools
August 1st marks the date that the common app comes out... just another reminder that we must retreat from our blissful summer bubble and come back to the reality of school, college applications and the end of summer.
5. Realizing that you'll have to see the entire school again
Summer is the time when you get to forget about all the drama that comes with school, and all of the people you don't want to see. You get to spend months with just your best friends; and when school rolls around, you realize that you have to see everyone once again.
6. Remembering all of the hard classes you decided to choose for this year
As you shuffle through your backpack that you probably have yet to clean out from last year, you come across your new schedule and question what could have possibly made you want to pick the classes that you did.
7. Hearing about how awesome everyone's summer was while you sat on the couch
Of course, the number one question asked when you finally reunite with all the people that you need to learn to tolerate again is "How was your summer?!" Which then follows with their super cool story of how they traveled the world or helped build houses in Indonesia; meanwhile your biggest accomplishment was remembering to close the fridge door.
8. Remembering that you and your best friend have lots of classes together
Because summers can be busy for lots of people school could be a nice reminder that you'll finally get to see some of your friends again or maybe even have some classes together; there are some perks to school starting up again, despite how much we may miss summer.
9. Remembering saying in May that "This is going to be the best summer ever!"
We all have pretty high expectations for how we're going to spend our summer vacation, and once you hit August, there is usually one of two feelings: "I had the best summer ever!" or "Man, I wish I did x, y and z." Regardless, there's always a fall bucket list to make, so be sure to get on that early!
10. Remembering that Christmas is just around the corner!
So maybe this isn't your first thought when the holidays roll around, but it's definitely something to consider! If you're looking for a new motivation for the new school season, then just think of how close (kinda) Winter Break is!
