Star Wars has consistently been one of the highest grossing cinematic series since the 70's when it first premiered. Not only has the iconic science fiction franchise created an entire brand with its name, but it has also built an empire (pun intended) within the Walt Disney Company as well. However despite the immense amount of success surrounding these films there is one in particular that is even more outstanding than the rest, and that one is the 1980 released, The Empire Strikes Back. This is when the action begins to heat up, romance begins to brew, and things start to get really interesting in this galaxy far far away.
To start things off, the whole movie is one big downer, but in the best way. Ultimately, in this episode, the good guys lose and it really shows the audience that life isn't always happy go lucky as it's portrayed in Episode IV A New Hope. Han Solo gets frozen in carbonite and sold to Jabba the Hut, Luke Skywalker loses his hand, and the rebel alliance overall takes a huge loss at the battle of Hoth. Despite all of these things occurring they never lose hope but it does make it easier for the dark side to prevail.
Although these three key instances play a major role in the success of the dark side in this film, Darth Vader himself plays a huge part in that also. Being one of the greatest villainous leaders of all time, he and his storm troopers really take charge throughout this movie. At the end of the film he also delivers one of the greatest cinematic shocks of all time that left audiences in awe after leaving theaters (no, don't worry I'm not gonna spoil it). This moment brought us one of the most iconic movie lines of all time, let alone within all nine released films. It is even frequently referenced by non Star Wars viewers proving the line, along with the films, popularity.
It's not only these things that make the film spectacular but also the romance aspect. Without giving to much away this is the episode in which the main couple finally admit their love for each other and begin pursuing each other. Exciting? I know.
Not only will Star Wars go down in history as one of the most famous series of all time, but it will forever be relevant due to the technological advances and strides being made to in the real world to keep it alive. The new trilogies stay with the times while also being light years ahead of it's own. But despite the new films being put out every two to three years none will ever top Episode V The Empire Strikes Back
