The Earth According to the Bible

Do you interpret the Bible loosely or more literally?

Below, I have listed a few verses from the Bible that talk about the earth. I have copied these verses word for word out of an NIV and KJV Bible. There are definitely more verses that explain the earth, but these were the ones that stood out to me the most. Grab your Bible or open your Bible app and search the following verses for yourself. It also helps to grab a dictionary to look up any words you might not know the meaning of.

Isaiah 40:22: “He sits enthroned above the circle of the earth, and its people are like grasshoppers. He stretches out the heavens like a canopy, and spreads them out like a tent to live in.” (NIV)

Proverbs 8:27-29: “I was there when he set the heavens in place, when he marked out the horizon on the face of the deep, when he established the clouds above and fixed securely the fountains of the deep, when he gave the sea its boundary so the waters would not overstep his command, and when he marked out the foundations of the earth.” (NIV)

Genesis 1:6-8: “And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters. And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so. And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day.” (KJV)

Job 26:10: “He hath compassed the waters with bounds, until the day and night come to an end.” (KJV)

Job 38:13: “That it might take hold of the ends of the earth, that the wicked might be shaken out of it?” (KJV)

Psalms 93:1: “The Lord reigns, he is robed in majesty; the Lord is robed in majesty and is armed with strength. The world is firmly established; it cannot be moved.” (NIV)

Matthew 4:8-9: “Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. ‘All this I will give you,’ he said, ‘if you will bow down and worship me.’” (NIV)

Joshua 10:12-13: “On the day the Lord gave the Amorites over to Israel, Joshua said to the Lord in the presence of Israel: ‘O sun, stand still over Gibeon, O moon, over the Valley of Aijalon.’ So the sun stood still, and the moon stopped, till the nation avenged itself on its enemies, as it is written in the Book of Jashar. The sun stopped in the middle of the sky and delayed going down about a full day.” (NIV)

1 Samuel 2:8, “He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap; he seats them with princes and has them inherit a throne of honor. ‘For the foundations of the earth are the Lord’s; upon them he has set the world.’” (NIV)

After reading these verses I started thinking about what the earth actually looks like. According to these verses the earth is described as a flat surface and not a sphere. This is confusing to me because in school I was always taught that the earth was round so how could I possibly believe that the earth could actually be flat? As I Christian these verses intrigue me immensely. I'd like to tell myself that I interpret the bible literally and that these verses really do show that the earth is indeed flat BUT that would mean that I have been lied to my entire life by my teachers and the government. On second thought, the government definitely has the resources to hide pretty much anything from us. It's definitely something to think about though. Who knows, maybe the earth really is flat. I will just have to ask God whenever I see him face to face.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
