Aside from skip-its and Polly Pocket, few things gave my childhood self as much joy as watching a Disney Channel Original Movie. Some of them became icons of my generation. Their impact could be felt from our language to our birthday party themes. Here are the Disney Channel Original Movies that not only defined my childhood, but my generations.
"Halloweentown" (October 17, 1998)
Kimberly J. Brown stars as Marnie, a young girl that realizes she is a witch. She goes to Halloweentown with her grandma Aggie to save the town from the dark force. Who could forget the sequel where Marnie was recast with no explanation.
"Zenon: Girl of the 21st Century" (January 23, 1999)
"Zetus lupetus!" Zenon was the greatest. She lived on a space station, she dressed so cool, and her best friend was a young Raven Symoné -- what more could you want!
"Smart House" (June 26, 1999)
The Cooper family wins an automated dream house. Everything is surreal until the programming gets a mind of its own and tries to be their surrogate mother.
"The Color of Friendship" (February 5, 2000)
A white South African girl named Mahree Bok spends a semester with a black family of a politician living in DC. The two girls come from completely different walks of life, yet they manage to change each others lives for the better.
"Life Size" (March 5, 2000)
Lindsay Lohan plays Casey, a girl who recently lost her mother. In an effort to bring her mom back she uses hair from her brush and a spell. She ends up turning her doll into a person. "Shine bright, shine light, be a star!"
"Rip Girls" (April 22, 2000)
Casey goes to Hawaii with her father after her mom passes. She learns to surf, makes amazing friends, and uncovers the truth her mother.
"Quints" (August 18, 2000)
Kimberly J. Brown is back again playing an only child who was getting too much attention from her parents. She gets her wish for less attention when her mom gets pregnant with quintuplets. Who could forget the shameless breaking of the fourth wall again and again.
"Double Teamed" (January 18, 2002
)
Twin sisters Heidi and Heather Burge become WNBA stars. They are pushed by their overbearing dad to be perfect players.
"Cadet Kelly" (March 8, 2002)
God bless Hilary Duff. I still have this movie on dvd. Kelly, a very girly spoiled girl, gets sent to military school by her step father. There she has a lot of trouble transitioning to military life. "You're on my list maggot"
"Get a Clue" (June 28, 2002)
Lexy Gold's teacher goes missing and she enlists the help of her friends to solve the case. The fashion in this movie is on another level. It's honestly worth rewatching just to see that people actually dressed like this.
"The Cheetah Girls" (August 15, 2003)
"Cheetah girls cheetah sistas" If you've never gotten a cheetah girls song stuck in your head, you weren't a 90s kid.
"Pixel Perfect" (January 16, 2004)
This was my go to album. Raviv Ullamn from Phil of the Future uses his dads new technology to create the perfect lead singer for his friend's struggling band. The only problem is that she is a hologram.
" High School Musical" (January 20, 2006)
This movie became a phenomenon. I still love seeing the gifs all over and who could forget the songs.
"Camp Rock" (June 20, 2008)
Who wouldn't want so spend a summer with the Jonas Brothers circa 2008?
