I have a lot of movies I enjoy watching, but "Pride and Prejudice" will forever be my favorite. There are lot of reasons why, but probably the biggest one is Mr. Darcey.
Mr. Darcey is the reason my expectations when it comes to men are so high. I absolutely love him, and yes, I know he isn't real. Thank you, though, for pointing that out. Also, even if he would be real, he is deeply in love with somebody else, and I respect that, I really do.
It's not because of the whole Colin Firth factor. I honestly couldn't care less about the actor who plays Mr. Darcey. It's about the fact that he goes out of his own way to make Elizabeth, his dearest, loveliest Elizabeth, happy. He is not perfect. He is actually far from being perfect, and that, my dear readers, is exactly the reason why I love him. He knows he isn't perfect, but he constantly works on his imperfections. He thinks about how his actions and behaviors make the people around him feel. Imagine a world where everybody would do that, even just a little bit.
Darcey does things without you having to beg him for it. He does it before it even needs to be done. He doesn't expect anything in return, and when you say thank you, he will tell you, "No worries, I did it because I love you most ardently."
Be more like Mr. Darcey; you don't have to spend huge amounts of money on me and and my family, just listen to me. When I tell you I am upset about your behavior, listen. I beg you.
Two hundred years later, women all over the world are still mesmerized by Mr. Darcey. Clothing lines, Facebook groups, you name it, Mr. Darcey has it all.
1. He doesn't call Elizabeth beautiful, he says her looks are "tolerable."
Yes, maybe "tolerable" isn't the most romantic thing to say to a girl, but it truly shows, that Mr. Darcey doesn't care about something so shallow as beauty. He loves Elizabeth because she is smart, knows how to hold her own and because she absolutely fascinates him. The fact she is beautiful is a nice plus, but not the reason Mr. Darcey feels the way he does about Lizzy.
2. He asks Elizabeth to dance again, even though she already rejected him before.
How many guys these days would ask somebody to dance with them again, even though they already got rejected? My guess is none. Besides the fact that no guy would ask a girl to slow dance, they also would be too proud to give it another shot. They would simply move on and try their luck elsewhere. Not Mr. Darcey. After being rejected, he tried it again, this time with success.
3. He loves reading, and he loves a woman who reads.
There is nothing more attractive than a guy reading. I don't know why, but that has always been a weakness of mine. I love reading, so sharing this love with my significant other would be pure bliss. Sadly, Elizabeth loves reading, too, so it seems the two of them are perfect for each other.
4. He is not a knight in shining armor.
Darcey doesn't rescue Elizabeth, and he keeps all of his financial involvement into her life a secret. He sees Elizabeth as his equal and knows she doesn't need saving. He doesn't want to impress her with his money; he simply does what he thinks is the right thing to do. Well done Darcey, well done.
5. He tells Elizabeth exactly what he feels about her.
Mr. Darcey, if things ever don't work out with Elizabeth, just give me a call. I'll be here dreaming about our future.
