If you’re lucky enough to be stuck at home or on campus during this lovely spring break, you might find yourself bored and indecisive on how to cure this boredom during a night or two (or three … or four). With the overwhelming amount of movies available to us on Netflix and the Internet in general, it’s really difficult to narrow down our choices to movies that prove to be worth watching. The movies on this will leave you wishing there was a sequel or that you had the ability to erase your memory so you could experience watching them for the first time again. No disappointments, I promise.
"Almost Famous"
This movie is perfect for a night when you’re not really sure what you’re in the mood for. Its sort of a combination of different genres (mainly comedy, romance and drama), with an underlying focus on the music industry circa the '70s.
"Catch Me If You Can"
If you haven’t seen the movie yet, make it a priority to watch it during break. Not only does it feature Leonardo DiCaprio as the main character (hands down one of his best performances), but it has a certain quality about it that keeps you on the edge of your seat for the majority of the movie. Unlike many films where the viewer can more or less predict what the fate of the characters 45 minutes in, the fate of Frank Abagnale (DiCaprio) is indeterminate until the last few moments of the movie.
"American Psycho"
Definitely save this for a night when you’re mentally prepared to witness the disturbing and dark fantasies of a man acted out (explicitly) on screen, and maybe have some Nyquil on hand to assist you in falling asleep after (just kidding, kind of). It details the life of a seemingly normal, successful man who gives life to his twisted, sick thoughts and all the while continues living his daily life. The most disturbing aspect of this movie is the character’s preservation of an image of ordinariness, even in the wake of his darkest undertakings. It makes you wonder what those who surround you might be hiding ...
"Office Space"
Although most of us don’t know what the 9-5 American office life is like (yet), this movie details what it would be like to completely subvert what’s expected of you in embodying the role of an American office robot, stuck inside your cubicle for eight plus hours per day with nothing in sight except your computer screen. The main character, Peter Gibbons, has an enlightening experience that leaves him feeling careless and spiteful towards his office job, and eventually leads to him and his friends attempting to enact revenge on the company they work for.
These movies will definitely help to break the monotonous routine for those of us with less than exciting plans for break, but make sure to have some popcorn or ice cream on hand too to enhance the movie-watching experience. And again, maybe some Nyquil or Benadryl to help you knock out after if you choose to go with "American Psycho."
